I am not sure if that is a proper heading for this thread.

We have two new priests in our parish. The one who presided at mass today is from India.

When he was giving himself the bread before handing out the chalices for the Eucharistic ministers he dipped his host into the wine. I didn’t think that was appropriate. Is this a normal thing? an Indian thing? or something else?

Any (name removed by moderator)ut would nice.

It is called intinction.

I have seen priests do this only when:

  • *]The cup is going to be offered to the congregation, and
*]The priest himself has a cold

He has also explained that was his reason for doing it, because as the celebrant he is obliged to receive both species, but also explaining that members of the congregation are not to do so, colds or not.

I don’t know all the answers:shrug: but I hope I got the right idea…

Yes, that was perfectly fine for the celebrant to do this.

Thanks for the replies. I didn;t know that. I remembered when I was a young kid the priest must have been concerned with the number of parishoners ‘dipping’ their own host, because he gave very stern homily about it. Basically he said it was not a correct way to recieve the Precious Body and Blood. That really stuck with me and this was the first time I had seen that in any form ever since.

The priest did drink from the cup after he ‘dipped’ his host. That wasn’t really addressed in the thread on tincture. But I am assuming this is just the procedure.

Thanks again!

Well if he did drink from the chalice also then that makes no sense to me.
