Preparation of the Altar and Gifts

I am wondering if it’s common place for the following to be “omitted” from the Mass because the choir is singing or the organ is playing. By “omitted” I don’t mean it’s not said at all. The priest says his part but the congregation doesn’t respond because they can’t hear what is being said.

P: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have, this bread to offer, which earth has given and human hands have made. It will become for us the bread of life.

C: Blessed be God forever.

P: Blessed are you, Lord, God of all creation. Through your goodness we have, this wine to offer, fruit of the vine and work of human hands. It will become our spiritual drink.

According to the missalettes in use in our church those prayers are ONLY to be audible if there is NOT an offeratory song.

So, it sounds like your priest is doing it right, even though almost no parish that I have attended in years is.

I concur. I go to a good orthodox parish (or at least it is in the winter when our Pastor is in town) and that’s how he does it. As soon as the music stops, however he more loudly continues with his prayers so the congregation can hear the remainder of his prayer and make their response (if that hasn’t passed).
