I know that as Catholics, we are supposed to pray for and prepare for a “holy death.” Can someone please help me figure out exactly how we are supposed to do this, though?

Thank you.

I think the term is Happy Death. I could be wrong though.

I was at a funeral yesterday and the Priest said that in all his years he has rairly seen a happy death and he described the women as aware and fully involved in the prayers of annointing and receipt of the Blessed Sacrament.

I think that it is a death with all of the sacraments just before death.
“Food for the journey”

I pray daily specifically for a holy death…and the Hail Mary includes at least in implication a prayer for a holy death “pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death”…

We can also pray for others to have a happy death.

Also, I was thinking that when we prayed for a happy death, God would prepare for us to live a life that would then lead us to a happy death. He’d help us love to go to Mass to receive Jesus, to be more prayerful, to go to Confession more often, to love our neighbors more, to deny ourselves in dealing with others, and to receive other sacraments, etc …

Example: one of the promises of going to First Friday masses is:
“I will be their refuge in life and especially at the point of death”. – If one doesn’t care much about mass, how one can keep up with going to daily mass? With God’s help, anything is possible.

There are quite a few different available prayers. I try to say this prayer daily because none of us know the hour of our death.:

My most sweet Jesus, I accept the death Thou has destined for me; with all the pains that may accompany it; I unite it to Thy death, I offer it to Thee. Thou hast died for love of me; I will die for love of Thee and to please Thee.

A “happy death” in latin is (bona mors).

St. Joseph is not only the Patron Saint of the Universal Church… he is also the Patron Saint of a Happy Death. So, you might want to develop a daily devotion to the Foster Father of Our Lord.

Also… I will post here a wonderful prayer. It is attributed to St. Charles Borromeo. It is called “Prayer to One’s Guardian Angel for a Happy Death”.

"My good angel: I know not when or how I shall die. It is possible I may be carried off suddenly, and that before my last sigh I may be deprived of all intelligence. Yet how many things I would wish to say to God on the threshold of eternity. In the full freedom of my will today, I come to charge you to speak for me at that fearful moment. You will say to Him, then, O my good Angel: That I (I insert my name here) wish to die in the Roman Catholic Apostolic Church in which all of the Saints since Jesus Christ have died, and out of which there is no salvation. That I ask the grace of sharing in the infinite merits of my Redeemer and that I desire to die in pressing to my lips the Cross that was bathed in His Blood!

That I detest my sins because they displease Him, and that I pardon through love of Him all my enemies as I wish myself to be pardoned. That I die willingly because He orders it and that I throw myself with confidence into His adorable Heart awaiting all His Mercy. That in my inexpressible desire to go to Heaven I am disposed to suffer everything it may please His sovereign Justice to inflict on me.

That I love Him before all things, above all things and for His own sake; that I wish and hope to love Him with the Elect, His angels and the Blessed Mother during all Eternity. Do not refuse, O my Angel, to be my interpreter with God, and to protest to Him that these are my sentiments and my will. Amen."

Hope this helps. God bless 🙂

May father passed 3 years ago and he was also devoted to praying for a Holy Death. If you do not mind I would like to share his parting with you.

He suffered with cancer for many years, untreated, because his doctor worked for his insurance company. You do not get good care with social medicine. November he was told he was in the last stages. They sent him home with a bottle of morphine. January 8th my mom gave me a call and said she had a plane ticket waiting for me. I left about 3 hours later. On the plain I do not think I stopped praying the Chaplet.

During the ride to my dad they told me he might not know me, he had not talked for about a week. My sister had propped dad up to aid him in breathing. As I walked through the door his eyes lit up and I saw a tear. I live 2000 miles away and had not seen my parents for a few years though we talked on the phone almost every day. I sat next to the bed and he clutch my hand as I talked. As I started to pray the Chaplet he relax!!! So I said it again. I was thinking of all the things I had been told happen as you die. It was very late so I needed to leave. He would not let go till I promised him several times I would return as soon as I woke up to pray again with him. The next morning mom called where I was staying to say we needed to hurry over. I took up my chair next to dad and started to pray the Chaplet again. The whole family was there and a lot of his friends, 30 people or so. Four hours later as I was in the middle of the Chaplet Dad stopped breathing. We were all very sad to see him pass, but I was also so very happy and grateful to Our Lord to let me be at his bed side to pray.

One of Dads best friends was a retired priest who had given him Last Rites a few days before. This same priest that had not said a public mass for many years, said Dads, with over 200 people there to pray for him and 30 or so Knights of Columbus.

This to me is a Happy and Holy death. To die in Gods grace, at home with family, having the Chaplet prayed and suffering yes but accepting it.

:signofcross: I think God gave Dad what he prayed for.

Pray for me as I pray for you. 🙂

And don’t forget:

Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us now and at the hour of our death.
