My girlfriend’s step-dad is a nice guy. He never misses Mass on Sunday and is open to letting his children participate in youth group functions and what not. I don’t know his spiritual life well at all but he seems to just go through the motions.
However, he is a reader. He has a new book from the library virtually every other day. (and these are large books)
I was thinking of a good Christmas present to get him. I want to get him a book that can catch his interest in the faith that he was born into. I want to try to spark a flame. However, I do not want to give him a book that will seem too spiritual right off the bat because I’m afraid it’ll turn him off.

Any ideas?

Thank you

What kind of stuff does he read? This book is about 10 years old, but it was on the bestseller list for a long time, called, “Nearer, My God” by William F. Buckley, Jr., founder and editor of the National Review. It’s pretty heady stuff, but it’s not difficult to read. It’s autobiographical and Buckley explains why he is a devoted Catholic. He even looks at different sides of some doctrines. I just read it myself and I think it would appeal to people who like to read history, religion, autobiographies and contemporary thinkers.

I really liked the book about Mother Teresa, “Come Be My Light”. You get a big dose of spirituality just reading her personal writings. It was very inspiring for me…perhaps it would be for him too…and it wouldn’t come across as seeming like you think he NEEDS to ramp up his faith.

DK books yust released a nice looking book called ‘The Vatican’, it has a nice cover, lots of photos and history. It looks like it would make a good gift.
