When we pray the rosary, a decade of the Joyful Mysteries is dedicated to The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple.

Why was this event so important?

I am sure there are other reasons but for one thing, to show that Joseph and Mary submitted to the Law in all things, that they and Jesus were Jews in belief, descent and practice.

Both Joseph and Mary show obediance to The Mosaic Law. As their firstborn male child, Jesus should be consecrated to the Lord. Mary offers Jesus to the Priest, and Joseph ransoms Jesus back. All according to the law.

In humility, Mary subjects hersel to the Laws Of Purification. In humility, Joseph acknowledges Mary as his wife and Jesus as his child, in spite of gossip and rumors.

Simeon was told by God that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah. Carefully read what Simeon had to say.

And although this is supposed to be a joyful time, yet Mary hears the words of Simeon, "And a sword will pierce your heart.’

And Mary knows the Jewish scriptures, and knows that her Emanuel is also to be known as The Man Of Sorrows.

For myself, I meditate on the concepts of humility and obediance during this mystery, having a long way to go on both.😦

This is the first time Jesus is publicly recognised and announced as the Messiah and saviour, by the prophets Simeon and Anna. His mission to the Gentiles as well as the Jews is also foretold, as well as his destiny as a ‘sign of contradiction’ ‘destined for the rise and fall of many’.

And certainly it was an important occasion in Our Lady’s life as well, like her assumption and crowning. Her own importance in this plan is acknowledged and her destiny to suffer along with Christ is foretold. I imagine it had a very deep impact on her.

And don’t worry, Harry, most of us are beset by pride and stubborn refusal of obedience.
