The English version should come out just in time for Christmas

…next year :o
BOOOO!!!

😉

Just kidding. I would love to see it come out sooner but I have so many books on my “to read” list (study bibles, spirituality, etc.) that it isn’t like I am starving for a book right now.

Thanks for the info!

Pax,

So far I’ve heard online, that it reaffirms Papal Infallibility, which I would certainly expect it to.

The Ukrainian Catholic Catechism actually does that? I can’t believe it . . . 😉

My Ukrainian-language copy is now in the hands of a Godson’s mother and I’ll pick it up when we see each other in a week or so.

The only thing that would be of interest to me in studying this Catechism is not whether it affirms or denies this or that Catholic dogma (:p), but how it presents those that we Eastern Catholics already believe . . . Hopefully, we believe them all! 👍

What is unbelievable is the number of those who find such affirmation a shock, as if the catechism was supposed to have come out with something, well, not Catholic . . .

It’s good that you keep us on our toes, Seamus!

Alex

It is available in both hard and soft-cover in Ukrainian at the Eparchy of St. Josaphat website stjosaphateparchy.org/Store.html about halfway down the page, “Christos Nasha Paskha”. The Catechetical Directory of the UGCC of 2000, the precursor of this Catechism, is silent about the Papacy. We will soon see what the Catechism says. The Directory states in Section 49, “The theological tradition of the Kyivan Church developed in the light of the decisions of the Seven Ecumenical Councils. It is rooted in Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and in the teachings of the Church Fathers, particularly Eastern. This theology is expressed in her liturgical life and Church law. Together, all this defines her theological tradition.”

On the 24th of June, 2011, the first ever Catechism of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, with the title, *Christ Our Pascha *was launched in L’viv, Ukraine. The Catechism is a vital document for the Ukrainian Catholic Church – for it is a treasure-trove of how the Church identifies Herself as a Catholic Christian community; as well as a blue-print containing the way by which the Church will seek to evangelize in the future, according to Her Eastern Catholic charism. The Catechism was spurred on by the call of Blessed Pope John Paul II that each of the sui juris churches clearly establish their spiritual identities.

In lieu of there currently being no English language translation of the Ukrainian Catholic Catechism – perhaps a brief overview can best introduce the non-Ukrainian speaker to the spiritual flavour of the text.

The Structure of the Catechism:
The title of the Catechism is echoed in the first words of the text; that is, the source and fountain of our Faith is founded in our Faith in the Risen Christ…

Any news or updates on this? Are we still looking at a Christmas 2012 release in English?

Peace, and Happy New Year!

I’ll ask bishop this week.
Thanks, I appreciate the follow up on that. One of my plans is to study the UGCC Catechism and the CCC side by side at some point to see how the two traditions handle things in comparison. I am doing that in the near future with the CCC and the Catechism of the Council of Trent as well.

When I finish the rest of my pile of books that is! 😃

First Look at the New Ukrainian Catholic Catechism"There was speculation that the new Catechism might present some nuanced understandings of some of the issues that divide the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, especially with regards to the role of the papacy. However, some rough, unofficial translations of key paragraphs in the new UGCC Catechism indicate that this is not a breakthrough document that might suggest a way to resolve the doctrinal differences."

“It does seem clear, however, that by citing both Pastor Aeternus from Vatican I and Lumen Gentium from Vatican II the traditional doctrines of papal infallibility and primacy taught at those Councils are being reaffirmed in the new UGCC Catechism.”

“The new UGCC Catechism also reaffirms the teaching of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, quoting Pope Pius IX’s proclamation made in 1854.”

Sorry for the dumb question but what do the initials UGCC stand for?

Any news, updates, scuttlebutt, rumors, wild accusations, conspiracy theories, etc? 😃

Well, Christmas has come and gone. Any news on this Catechism coming out in English?

Peace,
