I’ve heard after communion, but also after the rite of marriage before communion… I already have my programs printed showing it directly after the rite of marriage.

Thoughts? Is this okay?

in our parish, after the Mass ended.
then the couple will proceed to the Mary statue while the choir is singing a Marian song.

Tak

After Communion, but before the post-Communion Prayer.
That’s when we did ours. And that was the only time during the whole ceremony that I cried.

But Burbs is right also; ask the priest to be on the safe side.

This along with the unity candle is not part of the marriage rite.

The unity candle is a hallmark invention with really no substance. I could expand but I don’t want to hijack.
The marian devotion could possibly carry a little bit more weight, at least because it has to do with prayer.

I say this because some priests won’t allow it.

All of the hundreds of weddings I’ve played, the marian devotion happened after communion. But because this is an “invention”, the priest may choose it to go somewhere else. (Perhaps even before the vows? makes sense to me).

Yeah, we spoke with our priest yesterday, and he said wherever we wanted to put it was fine. We opted to do the couple’s prayer after the vows, and it made sense to place the marian devotion right after that, since it goes along with our vows and what we’re asking from God.

Thanks for all your replies! 😃

The Cathedral where I work at and also where I got married does it before the Concluding Rite/Final Blessing and after the Post-Communion Prayer. Since it is not part of the Marriage Rite, that is why it is considered optional, although most priests will permit it at least in my archdiocese and the surrounding dioceses where I’ve freelanced for weddings. My Archdiocese has now officially stopped the unity candle. The documents used to “discourage” it, but now it is no longer permitted at all, which is totally fine with me. 🙂

I’ve never heard of this but I like the sound of it. Could someone please tell me what it involves? thanks

I did this at our wedding but i don’t remember when in the Mass.

It involves taking flowers to the marian chapel placing them on the alter then standing (we stood as there was no kneeler) or kneeling and praying for a short time.

I said a Hail Mary silently.

That’s about it. I like this custom.

Does anyone know if this has any real history behind it? Was it ever done pre-Vatican II?

The couple takes a bouquet of flowers and presents it to a statue of Mary, says a prayer, and returns to the altar. Typically, a soloist would sing a song during this time. In our case we selected On This Day O Beautiful Mother for the song.

It typically is done just after Communion.

That’s when we did it, but we selected the Charles Gounod Ave Maria (with the Bach prelude).

yes, and its roots I believe are in old betrothal customs, and are tied to ethnicity and culture, rather than to church rites. Weddings used to take place outside the church proper, on the steps, in the entry, or in the case of a mixed marriage, in the rectory, and the procession to Mary was part of the first time the couple actually entered the church as a married couple, and a consecration of their family to her, and sign of the new wife placing herself under Mary’s protection and guidance.

In my culture (mexican) we do if at the end of mass so you do it as a married couple, right before the priest gives his blessing. Since I´m from the Sacred Heart School you present the bouquet to both the Virgin of Guadalupe and to Mater Admirabilis.

At the weddings at the Cathedral, this is done after Communion but, as others indicated, before the Post-Communion prayer. A Marian hymn, usually Schubert’s Ave Maria, is sung.

Frankly, because it is not part of the Nuptial Rite, it is the most approrpriate place for this devotional custom. I’m with agapewolf on the issue of the Unity Candle. It doesn’t belong in the service at all.

I beleive it is done after communion. Personally I don’t find it inappropriate because all the weddings I been too where the couple did this, either both of then or at least one of them are a friend of mine and were alumna of Magdalen College in NH.

When we were married, the priest insisted it come after Communion and the Post-Communion Prayer and just before the Concluding Rite / Final Blessing.
