Preteen Saturday Morning Kids Shows Abandoned By Broadcast Networks

Not surprised in the least. The funny thing was, when our station had programming targeted to under 12 (and thus subject to the tighter rules), we were always sold out with advertising - both weekday morning and afternoon and Saturday morning blocks. When we made the switch to 13-16 targeted programming, most of the advertising went away. We could sell more, but few were buying.

Of course, this will also dry up a source of revenue for the FCC by limiting $10,000+ fines for violations by broadcast stations when they messed up and went over the limits or accidentally aired a host-sell ad.

I suspect at some point the pendulum will swing and all E/I programming will have the limits.

Is it just as well that Saturday-morning cartoons have vanished from America’s commercial broadcast networks? I wonder what Raymond Arroyo has to say about the situation.

This is because of channels like Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon. They offer cartoons at most times during the day. A lot of their shows are targeted towards preteens.

Do those channels have a lot of toy commercials? How about junk food commercials?

I don’t watch those channels, so I don’t know what commercials are on there. I assume that they have a lot of toy commercials. I do not think that they have many junk food commercials anymore.

Not surprising. With Netflix offering kids shows on demand with no commercials, who needs to wait for Saturday morning?

The link no longer works. Can anybody tell me what it said there? Thanks. 🙂
