I was told the the early Roman Catholic Church allowed priest to marry. Can you tell me when this practice was stopped. I was also told that it in part was stopped because of the distribution of property.

In a nutshell that is correct. It first strated to take hold in the 300’s at a local Church Council. The idea of clerical celibacy then grew and expanded for several different reasons mostly because of St. Paul’s writing about celibacy, however property rights were also in there somewhere. By the 800’s it had become universal custom and by 1100’s was the law of the Church.

Just a nit to pick. It was a universal custom of the Western Church and it became a law of the Latin Church.

The question was asked about the Roman Catholic Church, not the Eastern Catholic Church practice. When I see Roman Catholic I think Roman Rite or Latin Rite. But for those who don’t think this way your clarification will be helpful.

I know sometimes I get to be annoying but sometimes I feel compelled to reply.

The thing that made me want to speak up in this was that the original question did say “Roman Catholic Church” but then the answser lacked those words, instead the answer used “universal custom” and “the law of the Church”.

I felt that one could mistake “universal custom” as meaning that this custom was held by the universal Church and that “the law of the Church” could be taked to mean, again, a law that the whole Church was held to.
