Hello

Yesterday (February 28) at mass, as the priest was about to read the gospel, he of course cited the gospel reading, however, he stated, the “gospel according to Mark”, not Luke.

If I’m correct, the Transfiguration is mentioned in more than one gospel but why would the priest cite Mark’s version instead of Luke’s (as per my missal)?

Thank you

He probably just read the Gospel for Year B instead of Year A by mistake. Both are the Transfiguration, so the mistake wouldn’t be that hard to make, if he were distracted.

Mistakes happen. On the first Sunday in Lent, the young monk who chanted the first reading took the reading from the wrong cycle. It threw off the priest’s homily! He corrected the mistake in the homily.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen this happen.

It’s not an abuse. It’s human error.

Two possibilities:
  1. He simply said the wrong name. He said “Mark” but read Luke.
  2. He accidentally read the Gospel from the wrong cycle.
And, of course, there’s the all time CAF favorite: he’s commited a serious liturgical abuse and a letter should be written to his bishop 😉

As I recall the Sunday readings are on successive pages in the Lectionary. I would guess that the reader opened to the wrong page and the celebrant just used the page that was there.

I used to read Saturday mornings. Some years back I managed to use the reading for the Saturday in the Fifth week of Lent instead of the Immaculate Conception. The celebrant continued with the Gospel and tried to adapt his homily to avoid embarrassing me. He shouldn’t have bothered. Everyone noticed that the Responsorial Psalm did not match what was in their missalettes, and I only had one reading instead of two. :o

It was easier being an altar boy in the pre-VII days. no one really knew what you were supposed to be doing. So whatever happened you just genuflected twice and kept going. 😃

Some well-intentioned person probably set up the wrong reading. It happens.

yeah really,
OMG! the priest is possesed by demons! lets tell his bishop!

Aren’t the Year B readings read (pardon the redundancy) if there are catechumens?

It might have been the Mass where the elect are present. OR someone forgot to put the ribbons back after a previous mass attended by the elect.

The Cycle A readings are done when the elect are present. However, this is for the 3rd, 4th and 5th Sundays of Lent, not the 2nd Sunday.
