Priest not distributing the Eucharist?

Hi,

I went to Mass last night, and I noticed that the priest did not distribute the Eucharist. He sat in his chair while the two eucharistic ministers distributed the hosts. Is this an allowable practice?

In the OF - only if he is disabled to the extent that he cannot physically do it.

Now compare this with my pastor who broke his foot a few years ago, said Holy Mass using crutches and was wheeled up and down the communion rail distributing Holy Communion by himself.

The priest could have sat in a chair, a high chair in fact to get it done if he is unable to stand for long periods of time.

So your answer sadly, from my personal opinion is NO…no way.

In many areas we are seeing them getting us ready for priestless churches. Our Diocese has already addressed this situation and already is going on with parish re-configuration. Many parishes have communion services at least twice a week to give the pastor two days off…more communion services to come I am sure…with sister mary jane wannabe officiating!

They CANNOT reconfigure my parish though. And no lay person is permitted to touch the Sacred Host where I attend regularly attend Holy Mass.

And friend…the lay people who aid in distributing Holy Communion in the OF are NOT “Eucharistic Ministers”. They are called “Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion” to distinguish them from the Ordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (Bishop, Priest or Deacon).

And above all… I thought this was the “Traditional Catholicism” forum so why is the subject matter of Lay Ministers of Holy Communion being brought up here?:confused: This post belongs in the Liturgy and Sacraments forum.

I think the answer will be no. If that is done then it can possibly label the proper rubrics for the OF as “not traditional”.

The Traditional Catholicism forum needs to be revamped and renamed to the “Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite Forum” complete with sub forums to boot.

I’d give him the benefit of the doubt. Our priest sat down during the distribution of Communion one week and it turned out he was very ill. DH and I ended up with the same thing he had and I was honestly amazed he was able to say Mass, let alone distribute Communion.

If, however, this is a regular thing with your priest, I’d talk to him and see what’s up.
 
In our parish, during the Sunday of Divine Mercy Mass the retired Bishop and only celebrant sat down while the Deacon, Acolytes, and EMHCs distributed the Communion.
