I was wondering if there was a registry for priests in the US? I know there is one for my state, but what if they aren’t part of an
archdiocese?
In looking for 2 old priests I knew, one left he priesthood to get married and one who was very conservative, had a disagreement with our bishop and left to go to Florida. He didn’t leave the priesthood but someone told me he does masses on occasion for a church down there but isn’t affilitated with any one area. (They didnt know what part of florida)Kind of sad, he was very orthodox and I don’t know what happened, but he didn’t like something and knowing how “old school” he was, probably would have been a fit somewhere else.

Thanks, I’ll try that, but it says “part of the archdiocise” which I know he isn’t part of any. I guess you don’t have to be under one to do masses, etc. I know he wasn’t in trouble (except for his disagreement with his bishop) and he just couldn’t be a priest and live with whatever it was in that bishops diocese. Since this was a few years back, I wonder (although this might be “gossipy”) if it had to do with the scandals and things he knew, etc. but of course I don’t know that. I just remember him being very much like an EWTN priest and some thought he was too orthodox. The priest that was also at our church, much older, got along with him great and they were a nice blend of personalities.
Always sad to lose a good priest, but it’s hard today in a lot of ways.
Thanks again!

yes there is a guide a printed book updated every year every parish has one, there is also a guide at least of dioceses on the bishop’s website, don’t know if it has order priests. every priest, even retired, who has not left the priesthood is assigned either to a bishop, or to an order. that of course does not prevent a priest from just “dropping out” and leaving NFA but in general they can be found by their bishop, not necessarily by you, for getting their SS checks if nothing else

I assume you have tried the usual internet white pages and so forth

no priest is “kicked out” for being too orthodox although they may be disciplined for disobedience or other infractions, in an established canon law process, not by whim of their bishop.

Puzzleannie, he wasn’t kicked out, he left because he wanted too. Someone who kept in touch with him for a while said it was something he couldn’t tolerate with the Bishop.
I read about another priest in Darien about that time that turned in a bad priest, Fr. Fay, that just left too. He must have gotten frustrated and turned to private eyes rather than rely on the church to get this priest to stop. He was using great amounts of church funds for other things. One of many links

we have forum rules about criticising particular priests by name, please observe them

in this country anybody that wants to be found can be found by readily available means including the USPS and internet

Sorry, didn’t realize that, but this is public news, from newspapers. If you can’t talk about something in the news, it seems odd. But I wont mention names again.

…he wasn’t kicked out, he left because he wanted too…
While the Official Catholic Directory does record the names of priests associated with dioceses and parishes in the U.S., it may not record those who have ended such association for any reason, or if it does, the information on those priests may not be current.

Google him by name or use a “person finder” program or website using his name and birthdate if you have it.

I used to do repos - it is easy to find people.

BUT, even if it is “in the news” please don’t air dirty laundry and accusations about individuals.

Thanks, I might meet someone this weekend that was writing him yearly and I can have her give him my best wishes, etc. It’s good to know about the registry though, espcially when some move.

to discuss current news articles go either to secular news or Catholic news forum, post a link, choose thread title according to title of the article you are linking

make sure it really is a news article in reliable media, rules in those forums will give you more detail

Oh, okay, I knew I saw posts like that before, that must have been where they were.
I agree, unless someone has been convicted or admits it, you should wait (re- crimes) and then get it off your chest and think of ways to improve, not regurgitate it over and over.
I think as Catholics, we lived way too much in a bubble years ago, that bubble burst and we paid a price for it. I’m not just talking about the scandals, but other things. Maybe we as parishioners, don’t get lot of imput, but if you don’t feel like you have a voice, it’s hard to keep your faith up, maybe not in God, but in the earthly hierarchy.
