If you’re curious how much your parish is paying your priest, you can probably look at the parish’s financial statements and reports. It’s typically not a secret. In our diocese, the salary is set for all priests. Pastors get about $1700 per month plus healthcare, housing, and food. Priests then pay an effective tax rate of about 30%, and the salary mentioned there is pre-tax.

In addition, the priests here must have a reliable vehicle which they purchase and maintain. They put on a LOT of miles on their personal vehicles, almost entirely in service to their ministry.

Once retired, priests then need to pay for their own housing and food, so saving for the future is important. Retirement is about age 70, and even then there is more than enough work to be done.

For the U.S. this is surely adequate, but not overly extravagant, I think.
