Priest skipping penitental rite

At daily Mass yesterday, the priest did not do the penitenal rite at the start of Mass. Instead he announced it was the Feast of St. Ambrose and gave us a history lesson (he also called St. Ambrose an apostle?)
Anyway, if the priest skips this rite can you still absolve yourself of venial sins by praying later on during the Mass about them?

Are you sure he is skipping the penitential rite? Some people (not necessarily you) are under the false impression that the Confiteor (I confess to Almighty God…) is the penitential rite. It is one form of the penitential rite but it is not the only one.

There are two shorter versions that use the Kyrie. If you are saying the Kryies, you are 99.9% likely to be saying the penitential rite.

Another way to licitly skip the penitential rite is with the Asperges.

If you are not doing the Asperges, not saying the Kryies, and not saying the Confiteor, you should talk to your priest.

If you want to see what the two other forms of the penitential rite specifically look like, google search the Roman Missal.

As to whether you can still be absolved of your venial sins, I am not sure. I would suspect you cannot “absolve yourself” by saying certain prayers. Not sure though.

You can be absolved of venial sin by being sorry for it. A good act of contrition should suffice. Also, if you’re receiving the Eucharist that in itself absolves you of them (though you’re likely wanting to be as pure as possible before receiving).

There are three courses for the Penitential Rite. A) Confiteor followed by Kyrie; B) a short bit of dialogue followed by the Kyrie; C) the Kyrie with interjections. Form C is the most common. I don’t think I’ve ever heard form B. I hear Form A from time to time.

If there is the Asperges, then yes, the Penitential Rite is skipped. It is also skipped when Mass is join with the Liturgy of the Hours (GILH, 93-99).

Postivie it was skipped. I went to a different parish due to time constraints. I was very surprised. No Kyrie or anything. Just the background on the feast day and then we sat down to hear the first reading.
