Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I was wondering if a guy who is gay can become a priest? Someone was telling me that they couldn’t, but if they are celibate or don’t act on their feelings, than I don’t see anything wrong with it. But, not sure. Does anyone know if this is wrong?

Yes he can.

Hmm… Well if they don’t act on it then they are not homosexual. They simply have what most call “Same Sex Attraction.” Having SSA in and of itself is not sinful whereas homosexuality is.

2005 Instruction Concerning the Criteria for the Discernment of Vocations with Regard to Persons with Homosexual Tendencies in View of Their Admission to the Seminary and to Holy Orders.
Congregation for Catholic Education

Extract from the new instructions:

QUOTE

the Church, while profoundly respecting the persons in question, cannot admit to the seminary or to holy orders those who practice homosexuality, present deep-seated homosexual tendencies or who support the so-called ‘gay culture’.

it all seems to hinge on whether “deep-seated homosexual tendencies” means ordinary SSA or some extreme version of SSA. but since heterosexuality is called “disordered” i guess there is not thought to be any ordinary SSA.

Where does the Church call heterosexuality “disordered”?
