Hello,
I am currently fifteen and not yet a priest but feel called to the Priestly Frateriny of St. Peter and the tradional sacrements. Ever since converting to Catholicism in 2017 I have also felt strongly called to the Dominican Spirtuality. I think that membership in the Priestly Fraternity of St. Dominic would help me to live that Dominican calling while still offering the traditional Latin mass in the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter. The only problem is the Priestly Fraternity of St. Dominic is a group of diocesan priests under the direction of the Dominicans and I do not know if they would be willing to accept a member of another religious order as a member, even though one of the largest missions of the FSSP is to run tradtional diocesan parishes, the priests preforming the role of a diocesan priest. So is anyone familier with the process involved with the Priestly Fraternity of St. Dominic and if they would be wiling to accommodate a priest under such circumstances

One does not have to join the FSSP (Fraternity of St. Peter) to celebrate the Latin Mass. Any priest can. It’s just that the FSSP does it exclusively. I don’t know the situation concerning the Dominican order you are interested in, but you can always say a private Mass in Latin.

Look for some Dominicans that offer the Dominican Rite according to the 1962 calendar?

Here’s a link to their site:

These are diocesan priests who have joined the Dominican Laity, and then portioned off into their own fraternity.

Diocesan priests have always been welcome in third orders and oblatures. However, this is the first I’ve heard of this group.

That being said, it looks like you’d have to be incardinated as a diocesan priest first, then seek membership with the fraternity.

As always, ask the groups in question. We on these forms can only give somewhat educated opinions. And you have my utmost encouragement and support of your vocation.

One thing I would ask the fraternity is whether or not you can join the Dominican Laity first, then join the fraternity after incardination.

Blessings,

Technically, on paper, that is true, but in reality, the bishop can make it very uncomfortable for a priest he does not want saying that Mass. In addition, a diocesan priest will have to say the Novus Ordo most of the time. That’s just a simple fact. The same goes for the Dominicans. They are allowed to say the Dominican Rite, which I have been to several times, but most of the time, the Dominican priests say the Novus Ordo.

But back to the original question. I think this arrangement may work. Though I am not 100% certain, I think there are FSSP priests that belong to another, looser fraternity as well. The best thing is just to ask.

Why not see about joining this Dominican group rather than the FSSP?

See, I don’t think that the FSSP is a religious order. As it says in their name, they’re a priestly fraternity. The best advice I can give you is that you should email the Dominican province of your area and ask if it’s possible.
