From political arguments supporting values opposed to the Catholic Church in the news, I glean that the role of priests in the Church is not understood. Here is my personal explanation.
Catholic priests don’t tell Catholics what to do. They don’t monitor the lives of Catholics in their homes, businesses, wherever. They don’t cajole or bully Catholics into complying with the Catholic standard.
Priests in the Catholic Church preach the good news of the Gospel; they preach Jesus. Catholics listen and try to live Christian lives. When Catholics fail in that goal, they go to confession to be forgiven and to receive grace to try again. Each Catholic monitors only his or her own conscience. The priest is not a righteous tyrant fiercely governing the purity of souls. They are not dictators in the Church.
I hope that helps.
