Priests outside the sanctuary

Since we’re talking about the Book of the Gospels, is it ever permitted for a Lector to process in with the it, in the absence of a Deacon? Our priest had me do this on Sunday, and it seemed strange, but I didn’t question him, because I wasn’t sure.

In the section on “Mass without a Deacon”

1. Once the people have gathered, the priest and ministers, clad in the sacred vestments, go in procession to the altar in this order:
2. The thurifer carrying a thurible with burning incense, if incense is used;
3. The ministers who carry lighted candles, and between them an acolyte or other minister with the cross;
4. The acolytes and the other ministers;
   ** 4. A lector, who may carry the Book of the Gospels (though not the Lectionary), which should be slightly elevated;
   ** 5. The priest who is to celebrate the Mass.
