so i’ve noticed that at the parish i attend RCIA at, i often hear a couple of the priests, and some of the RCIA teachers taking the Lord’s name in vain. Now i realize that we’re all human and we all slip sometimes, but it just seems like a priest of all people shouldn’t be saying it, and not even acting like its a problem…
has anyone else encountered this? 😊

By contrast: one of the meanest people I’ve ever known woud never think of speaking base language… but would casually demean students, sweetly and politely insinuate one was unworthy of life, etc.

It’s inappropriate to take the Lord’s name in vain. Given. And hopefuly, they confess it. If it’s bothering you, mention it to them, privately, and politely.

Odds are, it’s not consciously being done.

Do they perhaps have a Spanish-speaking background? The Spanish ‘Por Dios!’ which sounds so bad to us can be used where we would say anything from ’ Of course’ to ‘Crumbs’ or ‘Good Heavens’.

What are they actually saying? How do you know its taking the Lord’s name in vain?

Generally speaking, according to the CCC, taking the Lord’s name in vain means swearing a false oath in God’s name.

I think they mean using His name in a casual manner. Putting it in a sentance that it doesn’t belong in. Like “Oh my God did you hear about so and so”. We have a lot of people in our church that do that and it really bothers me too. It’s every where. Watch t.v. today and see just how many times in one show they will say it. I did it while watching “Everybody Love Raymond” I had to turn it off because it seemed like every other sentance someone was saying God. Couldn’t stand it anymore. I don’t know what you do about it. I think a lot of people don’t even know they are doing it. It’s just part of their vocabulary now. Like people who swear all the time. They just insert the words without thinking about it.
