The Gospel at today’s Mass:

For John 14:30, (again in John 16:11) I always feel I’m missing something with this line.

Depending on your bible translation it reads either “prince” or “ruler” of this world.

I’m looking for the proper Catholic teaching. I have found many opinions on the web, even one that said the ruler of this world is the Holy Spirit.

If the ruler is satan, did his “ruling the world” end at the resurrection or does he is he still “ruler/prince” of the world.

Or do we simply take the line to mean the less literal and more general meaning - that the prevailing values/powers that surround us, are not God’s values. Is the wording due to Jesus’ sombre mood forshadowing his death.

Clearly this world isn’t Heaven.

Ruler of the world is certainly not the Holy Spirit, as Jesus says “he has no power over me”. This means a secular ruler. Harpers Commentary says Satan. Satan was coming, entering into Judas.
