Hello,
I was wondering if anyone here has been a visitor to those behind bars. How does this work? I understand there is a background check. I have only done this once to a personal friend on normal visiting hours and I wasn’t allowed to give the person a bible. Does anyone have any tips? Thank you, Tim

There are weekends given in the prisons called Kairos. You must have your pastor sign a form and I am sure there will be a background check done. I have a son who is in prison and he attended a Kairos weekend several years ago. Last April (2006) I attended a Kairos Outside weekend. This is a weekend for women who have loved ones in prison. This weekend is given at a retreat house or motel. It’s fantastic!! Check out their websites.

Thank you for your response,
I’ll look into that. The folks at my parish that are involved with inmates meet on wed. nights. They do a background checks as well. My last check was done in 2003 for the military and cleared for “secret”, which I still have the paperwork for. But since then I have been in the hospital for depression/ptsd on a voluntary status. My Priest is aware of this, but not of my clearance with the military. He seems apprehensive in allowing this because of my stay in the hospital, but I have felt a strong calling for this for a year and a half now (since my buddy was in jail). And my therapist recomended that I do something like this as well. I have something to bring to the table, mainly the message of God’s mercy. I’m a walking example of this as a cancer survivor and with my past. I can relate with these folks, esp. in my home area. Thanks , Tim

It doesn’t appear that I have a vocation for this at this time. God Bless those who do. You are doing something wonderful for others. Maybe one day I can join you. Tim
