Does anyone have any good information about Catholic prison ministry? Felt called to it for awhile, a nagging pull that is not going away, but don’t know where to start. I think being a woman could put me more at risk. Already it is intimidating which is why I keep trying to push the inclination away, but it’s not going away. Any thoughts or concrete info like contacts are much appreciated. Thank you!

This is a diocesan ministry where I live, and I know both men and women who are involved. Call your bishop’s office to find out who’s in charge of the training and assignments. It seems the Holy Spirit may be tugging at your heart big time to serve Him in this way…

I felt the “pull” as well, for years. Recently, I spoke with a priest who ministers in the prisons and I am going to start writing to the prisoners. Since I am long winded and love to scribble, I thought it would be a perfect expression of my desire to reach out to these men and women.

Most parishes with more than one priest have a prison ministry. Check with your Pastor for information.

Father has promised to call next week with a list of names. I will let you know how it goes!

call your diocesan office as suggested to volunteer. you will undergo training by the diocese on how to conduct the pastoral part of your ministry. there will also be a mandatory training from the prison officials or the state correctional people on what you can and cannot do, how to conduct yourself, safety and security etc. These should allay your fears. There is a huge need for women to work in women’s facilities so hope you can pursue this calling. in Texas prisons are an industry second only to cattle and oil, and the need is desperate.

The fact that you are a woman does not mean that it will put you at greater risk, here the wife of a friend of mine belonged Prison Ministry, and she ministered to women mainly.

Thank you all for the info. We are now a one-priest-parish; I will check with my diocesan office for options. I feel I can relate better to men than women so that is my personal inclination but of course that is just a personal inclination. Pray for me??? As Fr Corapi says “that the Holy Spirit will kick my butt”.🙂

If you’re in the Joliet area then there’s no shortage of prisons that’s for sure…May the Holy Spirit guide you to where you are most needed.
