Our parish has started a Prison Ministry for our area. I felt compelled to join and fulfill the call to evangelize. Right now we go to a women’s unit. It is for Catholics and anyone else that would like to come. It is held in an empty block and they come to us. We have Communion Service with the Gospel and commentary, then we pray the rosary, then we have questions and talk. This has been working really well and we have had a good turn out in this unit.
Soon we will be going to the county prison where there will be no Communion Service, the prison won’t allow it, we are trying to get permission for it. So right now we will just be evangelizing going from block to block.
Any idea’s on a formula or perhaps some guidelines?
I thought perhaps start with a hymn I think there are a few hymns we have that everyone is familiar with. And then read the Gospel from the previous Sunday with a commentary, then pray the rosary. I thought we could get at least 3 blocks in this way. I also want to know what you think about praying one of the LOH prayers, perhaps the Office of Readings. I love that one as it has some excellent writings from the Church Fathers. But I don’t know how appropriate that would be for the prison.
Thanks for any ideas. I am not so good at preaching and coming up with stuff from the top of my head, I just am trusting Jesus for his guidance.

You can pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet too.

Also, hope might be a good theme to use as I can imagine that is something someone in prison would find comfort in. You can read something from Pope Benedict XVI’s Spe Salvi.

Here’s my favorite excerpt from the encyclical:
Human life is a journey. Towards what destination? How do we find the way? Life is like a voyage on the sea of history, often dark and stormy, a voyage in which we watch for the stars that indicate the route. The true stars of our life are the people who have lived good lives. They are lights of hope.
