There are many (though perhaps not well-known) movies that are “pro-Reformation” that depict events and people from that period. Many here are probably familiar, or have even seen the new “Luther” movie, and there have been other older movies of the same nature.
Movies about Mary Tudor, Henry VIII, Mary of Scotts, Queen Elizabeth, Alexander Cromwell, like I said, most of them not well known. A good one I did see was the one about Thomas Beckett (was that his name) who ended up being Archbishop of Canterbury (Anglican at the time?) and his professional friendship with his close friend Henry VIII ended there, and it was a pretty good movie. It showed Beckett’s love for Christ, and how he didn’t let his friendship with his best friend, the King, get in the way of his obedience to Christ as a Bishop on the earth.

Anyways, back to the question, has anyone seen any (probably older movies) shows about good Catholics that are worth finding and watching?

Keys of the Kingdom

Going My Way

The Bells of St. Mary

Ben Hur

THE GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW

Brideshead Revisited

A Man for All Seasons

The Miracle Worker

The Passion of Joan of Arc

The Song of Bernadette

The Shoes of the Fisherman

Lillies of the Field

Angels with Dirty Faces

That should keep you busy for a while

Wow, thanks Deogratias!

I’ve seen Ben Hur, it’s a pretty good movie from what I remember, not specifically Catholic (is it?), but thanks for bringing it to mind.

The Passion of Joan of Arc - is that the made for TV movie that came out about 2 - 4 years ago? I really like Joan of Arc, but I’m concerned that so much of what I “know” about her is just myth. Anyways, to be canonized as a Saint, she must have had quite a life to pass the Vatican Council for Congregation of the Saints or whatever looking into those matters of a person’s life.

One time at a college Christian retreat, we were in a meet and greet time and we were supposed to say a person we respected highly, other than Jesus Christ, and I told the people I got with that for me it was Joan of Arc. They were like “Oh, ok.” Probably wondering “why a girl who died hundreds of years ago?”

The Passion of Joan of Arc was released in 1928 as a film but is now available on DVD (it’s even older than I am)

It isn’t even a “talkie” but still critcally aclaimed for its filming and the acting of the woman who played Joan.

I liked the Nun Story with Audrey Hepburn. From what I have read about Carmelite spirituality, the movie did a good job in showing the formation of the novices to become nuns.

Just a few days ago, I saw a Joan of Arc movie. It was a black-and-white movie. I thought the movie was very good and moving. I made such an impression on me that that same night I had a dream that I was killed for my believes. In my dream I was shot several times for it. Thank goodness it did not hurt and woke up to realize it was only a dream.

Guess where I saw this Joan of Arc movie? On the TBN channel (Trinity Broadcasting Network.) I think the last name of the young actress playing Joan was Sebring. I cannot remember her first name.

Theodora

One of my favorite movies with a catholic theme is:
Brother Sun Sister Moon - a Zeferilli film (Romeo & Juliet, Jesus of Nazareth).
BSSM was beautifully made, charming, beautiful music, spiritual, and inspiring. It has been accused of only showing a piece of St Francis life, but I think it was very beautiful and showed his love for the poor and for simplicity. Five Stars!! 👍

We had a Family Movie night during lent last year at our parish. Father showed “The Scarlet and the Black” It was a 1950’s/1960’s movie about a priest who hid people from the Nazi’s around the Vaitican during WWII. There is a newer film by the same name, which doesn’t sound Catholic at all.

The one we say was very good, Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer.

There were two Thomas’ that held to their belief of Christ, both had kings named Henry. One was Thomas Beckett from the Middle Ages:

And the other was Thomas More, his king was the infamous Henry VIII:

The name of the movie about St Thomas More is “A Man for All Seasons”

What was the name of the movie about St Thomas Beckett?

Let’s not forget Jesus Of Nazereth and The Greatest Story Ever Told, nuff said.😉

“Come to the Stable” starring Loretta Young & Celeste Holm as a couple of nuns trying to build a children’s hospital. It’s a 1949 release, but worth renting if you can find it. It’s a heartwarming and humorous story about faith.
“The Trouble with Angels”–on the surface it seems to be a tale of silly, schoolgirl hijinks, but it’s really the story of the growth of a vocation.

Thank you everyone!!

I do sincerely appreciate all those mentions of movies you have recommended!

I personally liked Nicole Kidman’s The Others. What do you guys think? 🙂

I see no one mentioned “Change of Habit”, a late 60’s Elvis movie that features Mary Tyler Moore as a nun. ::shudder::

Oh–we’re talking about mvoie recommendations–now it makes sense. 🙂
