They clearly have a different definition of “pro-life”.

“that a biblically shaped commitment to the sanctity of human life compels us to a consistent ethic of life that affirms the sanctity of human life from beginning to end. “

The problem with this “seamless garment” logic is that there are few issues as morally weighty as abortion. Some would like to see immigration put on a par with abortion, but it’s simply not as morally grave. Abortion is a deliberate attack on the most vulnerable or persons and it demands our priority as Catholics, but also as human beings.

Ron Sider has had a reputation for “liberal politics” in the Evangelical Protestant world for decades now.

Back in the 1970s/80s, he came to fame with a wonderful, thought-provoking book called Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger that I would recommend to any Catholic–it’s very very good.

This book was one of the stimuli that brought about the “Simple Lifestyle Movement,” which encouraged Christians to commit to a simple lifestyle, buy less and give more, especially to the poor.

Many prominent Evangelicals got on board, including the entire Billy Graham Evangelical Assocation, which pledged to begin various outreaches to the poor (see Samaritan’s Purse, etc.).

My husband and I were married while the Simple Lifestyle Movement was in full swing, and it has had a tremendous influence on our lives. E.g., my husband drives a 20 year-old car and has no plans to replace it until it comes to a complete, unfixable halt. I have three pairs of shoes–for most American women, that’s unthinkable (and one of those pairs of shoes is a pair of cheap moccasins from Pay Less (when it was still open) that I wear as house slippers.

We have always been generous to a fault when it comes to helping those in need.

OTOH, we got our children involved in figure skating–the 2nd most expensive sport. And we sent them to an expensive Prep School and expensive private colleges.

So I guess we could be called Simple Lifestyle Dropouts–although our choices have meant that both of our children are living financially-sound lives and never have to borrow from us or anyone else.

I think the Simple Lifestyle Movement and Christian “liberals” like Sider were a good thing for Christianity, because they have caused many of us to view preachers like Jim Bakker, Joel Osteen, and others with caution. It’s not right to dismiss someone just because they are wealthy–but it does make you stop and think, “Maybe I should give my money to my local church where I can see where that money actually goes.”

Also, the Simple Lifestyle Movement stopped us in our over-spending tracks and caused Christians to make sure that in the process of adding the expensive new fellowship hall that they didn’t forget to help feed and shelter the ones we want to join us in fellowship.

I’m not surprised that Ron Sider wrote this article–because he is so committed to the “social gospel,” he sometimes goes a little off-balance. When a nation allows unborn humans to be killed, that nation’s “conscience” is dulled to the point where evil looks “good” or at least, “less bad.” The “Abortion Mentality” contributes greatly to the mentality that some human beings aren’t worth as much as other human beings–so it’s no wonder that we allow those “worthless ones” to starve, be homeless, be uneducated, and die of many injuries and sicknesses.

The anwer is to stop abortion on the grounds that ALL human beings are worthy of life–a good life.
