Pro-Lifers Protest Pro-Abort Hillary Clinton at Catholic Charity Event (VIDEO)

On Monday, May 7, the Pro-Life Action League protested an appearance by pro-abortion presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton a fundraiser for a Catholic charity. Fifty pro-lifers demonstrated outside the Chicago Hilton and Towers downtown during the luncheon benefiting Mercy Home.

“I’m sorry we have to picket this Mercy Home fundraiser,” said League National Director Joe Scheidler in a press statement about the event. “But Hillary Clinton’s appearance at their Graduates’ Luncheon is just wrong! This is a well-known and much loved Catholic institution, while Senator Clinton is unabashedly hostile to the Catholic Church’s teaching on the value of life.”

Mercy Home Under Fire

In the weeks leading up to the Clinton appearance, many loyal supporters of Mercy Home, including the Leauge’s Joe and Ann Scheidler, contacted Mercy Home Director Fr. Scott Donahue to voice their objections. Though Fr. Donahue said that he was troubled by the Clinton appearance, which was arranged without his approval, he chose not to take any action about it.
Donahue’s inaction stood in stark contast to the courageous decision by St. Louis Archbishop Raymond Burke to resign as chairman of the board of Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation when he learned that outspoken abortion proponent Sheryl Crow was scheduled to play at a fundraising event.

Scheidler remarked, “The young people who benefit from Mercy Home’s ministry are the very same ‘unwanted’ children Clinton and NOW would consign to the abortion scrap heap. Presenting Clinton as a role model for the young graduates is a travesty.”

In 2004, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a policy document calling on Catholic institutions not to have pro-abortion politicians put on a pedestal due to the scandal it would cause. In their document, Catholics in Political Life, the Bishops’ Conference states: “The Catholic community and Catholic institutions should not honour those who act in defiance of our fundamental moral principles. They should not be given awards, honours or platforms which would suggest support for their actions.” (see coverage: lifesite.net/ldn/2004/jun/04062102.html)

Joseph Scheidler, national director of the Pro-Life Action League has organized a demonstration against Senator Clinton’s appearance in Chicago. He told LifeSiteNews.com that her appearance would set a precedent for pro-abortion speakers at other Catholic events.

“They’ll use that, Hillary can then say, well, I spoke at Mercy Boys in Chicago,” he said.

Pro-Life Group to Protest Hillary Clinton at Catholic Charity Event

5/7/2007 10:00:00 PM -Christian Newswire
“I’m sorry we have to picket this Mercy Home fundraiser,” said Joseph M. Scheidler, National Director of the Chicago-based Pro- Life Action League. “But Hillary Clinton’s appearance at their Graduates’ Luncheon is just wrong! This is a well-known and much loved Catholic institution, while Senator Clinton is unabashedly hostile to the Catholic Church’s teaching on the value of life.” The Leader Council of Mercy Home invited Hillary Clinton to address the guests at their annual Graduates’ Luncheon today, without consulting Fr. Scott Donahue, director of Mercy Home. The League’s Executive Director spoke with Fr. Donahue, who, though he opposes Clinton’s appearance, said he could not rescind the invitation.

Catholic Watchdog Reports Fewer Pro-Abortion Commencement Speakers

5/7/2007 9:00:00 PM
By LifeNews.com (Cardinal Newman Society) -Steven Ertelt
There’s good news at the Catholic colleges and universities across the nation, according to the Cardinal Newman Society. Unlike in previous years, the number of pro-abortion commencement speakers and honorees is on the decline.

For the past nine years CNS research has identified invited commencement speakers or honorees at Catholic colleges who have taken public positions contrary to Catholic values or teaching, such as abortion. In 2006, CNS reported problems at 24 colleges with speakers or honorees who publicly advocated abortion, embryonic stem cell research, or assisted suicide.

I just had a couple friends email me their responses to Mercy Home. I won’t disclose their names but here is their email…

Dear pro-life friends,

This is a terribly disappointing piece of news. In my small way, I have donated to Mercy Home for a number of years but now I am rethinking if I will do so in the future. This is the problem with many of our clergy who have things happen “without their approval”.

A great harm is done and will not be undone no matter what explanation or retraction is given. There is so much bureaucracy, too many committees without proper accountability in many of our Catholic institutions. It is very sad that we are our own enemies in many ways. We need very courageous shepherds like Archbishop Burke, Fr. Deutsch at Holy Cross in Batavia, Fr. Thomas Milota at Sacred Heart in Lombard.

I am writing to Fr. Donahue to express my great disappointment and I hope that you will do the same.
Code:
         Rev. Scott Donahue

SILENCE IS NO LONGER AN OPTION.

Here’s another…

I JUST FINISHED CALLING MERCY HOME 312-738-5780. (Don’t call 312-738-7580 it is not in service any longer).

A lady answered and said Fr. Donahue was not available. So I told her who I was and the purpose of my call . I respectfully expressed my great disappointment that Hillary was invited to speak not only in a Catholic Institution but a Catholic Institution for children.

She happily reported all Hillary did was “congratulate the children and the children were very happy”. This lady claimed that there was nothing political in Clinton’s speech. I tried to explain that Mercy Home is giving mixed signals inviting a pro-choice, pro-gay , pro-partial birth abortion speaker in a Catholic Institution just “to make the children happy”.

There are many faithful true Catholic speakers who could have delivered the same message! She also said that Clinton has done wonderful things for children!!! (You figure that out!). When I asked her if Clinton had done anything wonderful for Mercy Home, she said “no but other institutions”!??? I asked for her name and if what she told me this also her opinion, she thanked me and hang up.

I URGE ALL OF YOU TO PLEASE CALL MERCY HOME AND WITH GOD’S GRACE, FR. DONAHUE WILL REALIZE THAT THIS IS NO SMALL MATTER . HERE IS YOUR CHANCE TO DEFEND YOUR FAITH AND BE COUNTED.

Please do it now and I pray that you all will have the courage to defend our Faith
.

Please post your responses to Mercy Home here after you call or email them!
