Discussion seems to be that groups may be offended by team names based on ethnicity, etc. I am offended by teams that are named after the archenemy of humanity, the Devil. It is idiotic to give the evil one any type of allegiance or to make him seem to be a hero. I would be afraid every minute if I were wearing a sweatshirt presenting his name or supposed aspect.

Devil’s food cake or deviled eggs must be hard to swallow! 🤣

The MLB team in Tampa dropped the “devil” in their team name a few years back. I know there was controversy about the name of the NHL’s New Jersey team some years back…not sure if there is any controversy with Duke University’s teams, however.

That’s an interesting thought. I think our hyperactive news media and social media tend to push people toward taking offense.

Yes. People seem hyper-sensitive and thin-skinned. Everything seems to be politically incorrect or offensive.

This is not “off topic”, I’m establishing something here first. For the record, “Hall of Fame Coach” Tony Dungy took issue with Don Lemon of CNN over what he said about Jesus Christ:

NFL legend Tony Dungy says ‘anyone who believes the Bible’ wouldn’t agree with CNN host Don Lemon

So, with that out of the way, committed Christian Dungee weighed in on this discussion of mascots:

Tony Dungy on Washington: “It’s not hard to change the name”

Tony Dungy says he stopped using Redskins’ name during broadcasts

So, I think his point-of-view is worth noting. I’m not saying what’s right or wrong myself.

Meaningless background…there are thousands of Christian people who claim the Bible, the Church, Christ himself would not agree with those holding opinions differing from their own.

the Chiefs
The Chiefs were actually named as a tribute to H. Roe Bartle, mayor of Kansas City at the time who was instrumental in bringing the Dallas Texans pro football team to K.C. Bartle’s nickname was “Chief” and the team’s ownership named the team in Bartle’s honor.

Of course the team has over the years included many references to native Americans, from the name of the Stadium (Arrowhead Stadium) to the “tomahawk chop” during games, etc.

Wake Forest University are known as the “Demon Deacons”, which always puzzled me because I didn’t understand how those two words fit together.

As far as Washington is concerned, when their baseball team was the Senators, they had a reputation of being unsuccessful to the point there was a saying that went something like, “Washington - first in war, first in peace, and last in the American League” or something similar.

Proposal name change for Washington Redskins:
