Let’s take the example of you seeing a petition against abortion. You have a choice to make – sign it or remain silent. You being silent is, in God’s eyes, your vote for the enemy. You might say to yourself any number of comments that gives you an excuse not to sign. As Jesus said – “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” Matthew, chapter 12

We all need to realize that sins of omission can be serious because you could be casting a vote against God; and that certainly is not going to help you get to heaven.

We all need to be more aware of the opportunities God gives us each day, our decision to respond or not, and how that affects the Kingdom of God and our salvation.

Now, let’s see how many people say I am making a mountain out of a molehill.

Only the will of God.
“To him therefore who knoweth to do good, and doth it not, to him it is sin.” (Jas 4:17)

“Not every one that saith to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven: but he that doth the will of my Father who is in heaven, he shall enter into the kingdom of heaven.” (Mt 7:21)

“How narrow is the gate, and strait is the way that leadeth to life: and few there are that find it!” (Mt 7:14)

MY CHILD, I will teach you now the way of peace and true liberty.
Seek, child, to do the will of others rather than your own.
Always choose to have less rather than more.
Look always for the last place and seek to be beneath all others.
Always wish and pray that the will of God be fully carried out in you.
Behold, such will enter into the realm of peace and rest.

(Book 3, Ch. 60; Imitation of Christ; termed ‘golden book’ by Pope Pius XII)

@Le_Crouton My Guess:
Is it a sin: to skip signing a petition that is in front of you on a grave issue?

A lot of the commandments are written in the form “thou shalt not”. As Chesterton said, few things are prohibited and many things are permitted. Apart from going to Mass, there is not much we are actively obliged to do

You’re not obliged to sign every piece of paper that’s put in front of you, or to donate to every charity.

OTOH, you should be doing something to promote the betterment of mankind.

Due to my conversations with a volunteer at the fraud dept of a police dept., I don’t sign petitions because most of the time it’s an Identity Theft scam.

All Identity Thieves need is your name and address & next thing you know, you owe Big Bubba’s Motorhome Dealership $180,000. for “your” recent purchase & then you check your credit and find all kinds of other credit cards now in your name & then on your drive home from work, you get pulled over for a taillight and the Police Officer runs your driver’s license and next thing you know you’re off to jail for a warrant for missed court hearing for a DUI you supposedly got in a State you’ve never even been to. It’s a nightmare to attempt to resolve, even if you have good Identity Theft coverage.

I’m relatively certain, that as Catholics, we have a right and duty to protect ourselves and our children (who could literally end up in Fostercare while Identity Theft situation is going on until it can be straightened out, which sometimes takes years). I’m definitely NOT going to be signing any petitions.

But as far as Pro-Life Activism is concerned, I’m happy to meet you at the local abortion clinic to give a prayerful presence.

Due to my conversations with a volunteer at the fraud dept of a police dept., I don’t sign petitions because most of the time it’s an Identity Theft scam.
And even when it’s not identity theft, the person running the petition will likely use your information to send you 1,000 spam e-mails including dozens of additional petitions.

i will sign a petition if I know who’s running it, where it’s going, and I have some idea it will actually do some good.

Example: I am in my local voting district and someone I know from my parish or from a community organization contacts me to sign a petition asking our rep to vote against an abortion bill, or to send to the governor showing we don’t support an abortion bill, or against a PP clinic opening up on my corner. In those cases, I may very well sign the petition. I might also write individually to my rep on the voting issue or to the governor on the bill issue.

Another example: I am in some area where I’m not registered to vote and a random stranger on the street approaches me and wants me to sign a petition against abortion, showing me some grisly photos of aborted fetuses and maybe also looking for a donation. In this case, I don’t sign because I don’t know the person, I don’t know if this is a legit petition or a scam, and I don’t vote there so my opinion is not likely to carry much weight with the local authority.

We are not obligated to sign everything that’s thrust in our faces any time, any where and by any person.

I’m kind of wondering why the OP would think we were obligated. It seems like the same type of post we get from people who insist we have some obligation to give money to anyone who asks us on the street, or an obligation to be friends with anybody who wants to be our friend whether it’s actually healthy/ productive for us to be with that person and spend our time in that friendship or not. It fails to take reality into account.

If I sign any paper put in front of me my trust had to have been earned.

Jesus never said go forth and sign the petitions. Petitions don’t feed the hungry, clothe the naked, or care for the woman with a problem pregnancy.

Hesitancy to sign something does not equate to cooperating with evil anymore than having a feel good moment from signing a petition saves a baby.

I’ve never seen a petition against abortion. I get letters every day from pro-life organizations asking me to fill out surveys that will be sent to all our elected officials, and to contribute to their cause. I’m sure many of them are worthwhile, but I get tired of the constant barrage and can’t afford to donate except to a couple carefully chosen ones. (Students for Life is a good one.)
