In my novel, an atheist wants to get a demon exorcised from her (Catholic) boyfriend by a priest. What would have to be done to arrange this?

A Catholic person would speak to their parish priest, who will then determine if the Diocese needs to be contacted. There will be a complete medical and psychiatric process before anything is decided.

Will the character have demonic vexation, obsession, or possession symptoms? If vexation or obsession, any priest can do those exorcisms. If possession, then an exorcism rite done by a exorcist priest designated by the bishop is needed.

The only immersion is from speaking directly with priests. Reading fiction will only teach fiction

Priests I know suggest the book The Rite (NOT the film). Non fiction, just the facts. It is not as dramatic as fiction.

I wish you the best. And ignore advice that isn’t helpful. 😃

If he were to truly be an atheist how would he even believe in demons? Why would he pick the Catholic Church to do it?
