Today as we celebrate Thanksgiving and enjoy our nation’s holiday, let us praise and thank God for all of His blessings to us, as I believe many will be doing.

I was grateful to read the Proclamation of Thanksgiving by our former President Abraham Lincoln. Many of us do not realize that this day was set aside even while our country was in the midst of the Civil War where untold lives were still being lost in battle. It seemed appropriate to share this with others like myself who do not know the history of this day.

Of course Eucharist means Thanksgiving–give up the Eucharist and you have to invent an imitation public secular holiday to fill that hole. To a Catholic, every day is Thanksgiving, because every day the Eucharist (Gk. for thanksgiving) is being offered.

Anyway…as I review this year, it is an apparently sucky year, but I have SO MUCH to be grateful for. Divine Providence has looked after me at every turn. I was very fortunate to have a PET CT fusion scan in June that detected a very aggressive breast cancer (my THIRD primary cancer), and I have since had surgery and am on the home stretch receiving chemotherapy; will have radiation after New Year’s. The only reason I had the scan was because of the apparently bad news that I had an ongoing low thyroid cancer cell count in my bloodstream…but that cell count ended up saving my life! God keeps working things out like that for me in my life, so I no longer get upset by bad news. Sometimes the silver linings that I don’t know yet are so incredibly amazing.

I am not in good shape to travel for the holidays this year, but Divine Providence arranged things…so that my brother’s teen children came and visited me for a week this spring, and then I made an extra trip for my sister’s son’s HS graduation…so I got in my two family visits, just not during the holidays.

I’m also grateful for kind, compassionate friends who threw a Thanksgiving dinner for me in early August (cooking all day in 100 degree weather!) - because I was about to start chemo and knew I wouldn’t be able to have Thanksgiving dinner on Thanksgiving Day itself. I was so surprised and moved by their kindness, I burst into tears! They are wonderful people and soooo kind. There have been many, many people who have shown me much kindness and support and practical help through all of this. Thank you.

I am thankful that my father has had stable health and is doing pretty well in a very good nursing home. I am grateful for the good health of my siblings and their spouses and children. Everyone seems to be doing pretty well.

I am thankful for my health care team, and researchers and scientists and pharmacists and nurses and docs. Jesus is the Healer but he delegates a lot of the work! heh heh heh

I am thankful for God arranging certain things in my life just as they should be, so perfectly, better than I could have ever planned. One incredibly good one was getting back into rowing and getting fit and strong before cancer came back into my life. I am dealing with it so well because I am so physically strong! The best being led in prayer to decide no matter what the results of the scan, no matter what happens to me, God is good, and I will always praise His name, and He has given me peace and joy in all circumstances, and even if I am being ground into dust may Jesus Christ be praised today, tomorrow, and forever!!!

(There are so many other things I could list that I am thankful for, but those are the highlights!)
