I’m not one to judge, I just want to share my experience and thoughts.

I’ve been meeting more Catholics these days then in the past and they are good people with a good foundation of knowledge in our faith. I’m surprised they let loose so easily profane words, so causally like it’s no big deal.

My thoughts “huh? You know the bible forbids that and many of you are preachers and yet you let these words out without even a flinch”

Profanity is not really acceptable to people who think with their brains and not with their tongues.

I’ve noticed some who seem to take a bit of liberty with the profanity. I don’t understand it.

It depends on what you call “profane”. If they are taking the Lord’s name in vain, that is a bad habit/ sin and they should stop. Same for the name of Mary, other holy words, etc.

If they are using the other cuss words for bodily functions, etc that do not involve the names of Jesus, Mary etc then that is more a matter of culture and personal opinion and not necessarily “profane”. We have been over this before and there are a wide range of opinions, so do not assume your personal opinion applies to all Catholics.

Going into that vein, I’m someone that refrains from even saying “Oh my God” outside a religious frame of reference. And if someone uses “Jesus Christ” like a curse word, I get uncomfortable. But when I’m alone, I’ll drop f-bombs and various swear words. Or if I’m with people that don’t mind those words, I’ll use them sometimes. And of course there are times when I realize it would be inappropriate to use such words such as around children or people that do mind.

Edit: The basic reasoning I have is that swears become wrong when they give offense, with that offense not being an intrinsic part of them.

The words I’ve heard are sh!t, wank!r etc.

I think it’s safe to assume in this case

You know the bible forbids that
It is not what is “forbidden” only but striving toward the positive:

Ephesians 4:29 Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear.

Do vulgar words impart grace?

I have made a concerted effort to never use a name of Jesus or Mary in vain. I try not to use saints either though I had a habit of saying “Golly Moses” that still persists at times.

I will use all the other non-religious words at appropriate places and times, alone or with others if appropriate. In some countries, certain words are part of normal business conversation.

Heard flavors of this since I was a child. Still not convinced.
Except for taking the Lord’s name in vain I’ve always found the concept of “bad words” to be ludicrous.
