Professional Stigma for Abortionists

Hi.

From what I understand, in the medical community (with physicians much moreso than nurses), abortion is subject to professional stigma. I’ve read many articles–both those congratulating it and those opposed to it–about abortion mills closing, and one theme I read about again and again is that abortion was initially seen as a “social justice” cause leading up to the year it was legalized in the US and up through the 80s and early 90s, so many physicians (although by no means a large percentage) offered abortion procedures. However, starting sometime recently, in the late 80s or early 90s, abortion started to become subject to a professional stigma, and therefore it is becoming much more difficult to recruit younger physicians to do it.

Is this correct?

I think this could be one of the best ways to stomp out abortion bit by bit. Incite a creeping, extreme professional stigma to it. Sort of like if you had a doctor friend who did it, it would make you think, “I don’t want to be seen with that guy anymore.”

Social stigma is VERY VERY powerful. It can be a force for good or evil though. You are correct that fewer and fewer doctors are willing to do abortions. As technology has improved it becomes impossible to ignore you are killing a baby.

As you know Gosnell was a failure at everything else so he became an abortionist. The proaborts are fighting this with “tele-aborts” and allowing Nurse Practitioners to do more. But as time goes on the stigma will force more and more mills to close. They are attracting very poor quality doctors and the word is getting out.

I wasn’t aware of that. What kinds of things did he fail at?
I meant as a physician. I saw a documentary on him and it was a case of local boy makes good in that he grew up in that neighborhood and when he got out of medical school he returned. However he was never able to build a practice as a family physician. He was NOT an ob/gyn although he ended up doing little more than abortions. Further from the beginning he was engaged in some pretty shady practices. I believe before Roe was decided, he was involved in an “Abortion In” type event where a group abortion was done to publicize this horrible practice. He also experimented on women with some kind of dreadful “roto rooter” type device that was supposed to abort the women. Unfortunately some of them were horribly mutilated.

This was not a top quality doctor…in fact after watching the documentary I wondered how he ever even made it INTO medical school.

Wow, how sickening.

Makes sense. Everybody deep inside knows what abortion really is. Especially doctors. It’s one thing to fool yourself when it’s an academic or political debate. It’s quite another thing to fool yourself when YOU are the one collecting and counting tiny arms, legs, hands, etc afterwards.

The professional stigma probably has an effect too. My wife and many other women I know make SURE their OB/GYN isn’t an abortionist before the first appointment. Why would you hire somebody like that to care for your unborn child? People really do know and act on what they know. Even many pro-abort women don’t want abortionists as their OB/GYN when pregnant with “wanted” babies. What does that tell ya?

This may be a good idea to keep more and more doctors from getting into this.

Maybe it would be a good idea if Pro life groups started putting their names all over the internet so alot of people would see which doctors are doing abortions? This may cause some to quit doing it, as they could become targets or at the least, loose their credibility.
