So after immense amounts of thought I can’t disagree with the fact the universe had to be caused by something which in and of itself could not have been caused or else it would not have been able to cause the universe. How can I get to belief in God from there? How do I know the cause itself isn’t a non being or just some greater mechanism we don’t understand? Thank you all again for all your time!

Congrats on coming this far.

To me the fact that the universe was caused implies that the cause has intelkegence.

I also believe in an objective morality which requires an objective standard.

Hope you find these helpful.

I know it may not seem far to many people but I truly believed we live to die and that there was no causation merely chance. Hopefully it’s a sign my mind is open!

Start to pray. Just talk to God and tell him to open you to faith in Him.
Go to adoration and sit there for awhile.
If you draw close to God, he will draw close to you.

It’s a huge step. I’ve followed your posts and do feel you’re more open than you’ve been thinking but it’s great that you sre beginning to see that.

Because a non-being isn’t anything at all, so you can discount that. As we know, nothing comes from nothing.

As for a “greater mechanism,” that can’t be the case because it doesn’t meet the criteria for what you know. The universe must have been created by something which is itself uncreated. A mechanism consists of several parts which are separate, but work together to perform a function. Mechanisms do not create themselves, they are the combination of multiple things. As such, they cannot be said to be uncreated.

On top of that issue, we also know that whatever created the universe must be intelligent, it must have order and reasoning. The universe is consistent. There is logic and reason to it. We se order to it, and the deeper we go the more evident that order becomes. That sort of order indicates intelligence. A mechanism is not intelligent, it is simply a tool used by something apart form itself which is intelligent. That also points to a single, transcendent creator.

I think I’m starting to understand! Thank you. I’m not going to lie this whole does God exist or doesn’t he exist intellectually is so difficult and yet I think I’m making progress thanks to people like yourself and the other kind people on this thread. I know a lot of people see most atheists asking for proof and assume they are trying to pull away faith but I’m trying to understand legitimately what I don’t understand I want people to have faith and hope!

Yeah, it’s incredibly difficult to get your head around. I mean, the greatest minds in history could only describe God through allegory…

We’re always really happy to help. So many people come here just to state their beliefs and then ignore whatever is said to them. They’re not looking to learn anything.

You, on the other hand, are genuinely interested in learning and discussing, so we’re more than happy to answer any questions you may have. ^^

If I could tell everyone there are a few atheists that are trying! We are bastardized by being raised in reductionism and scientism and it makes it hard to understand there’s anything else. Yeah there’s militant atheists but I promise some of us are trying with all of our being!

I’ve been thinking about this and I’ll need to consider it more but it did help thank you!
