I recently volunteered to do Security for a sold out Promise Keepers Event in Orlando Florida. I am a devout Catholic and was quite impressed at this event. I thought it would possibly be like a Billy Graham event but no denomination of a Christian Religion was noted, while most in attendance were of the protestant faith.

The 7 promises that were

A Promise Keeper is committed to honoring Jesus Christ through worship, prayer and obedience to God’s Word in the power of the Holy Spirit.

A Promise Keeper is committed to pursuing vital relationships with a few other men, understanding that he needs brothers to help him keep his promises.

A Promise Keeper is committed to practicing spiritual, moral, ethical, and sexual purity.

A Promise Keeper is committed to building strong marriages and families through love, protection and biblical values.

A Promise Keeper is committed to supporting the mission of his church by honoring and praying for his pastor, and by actively giving his time and resources.

A Promise Keeper is committed to reaching beyond any racial and denominational barriers to demonstrate the power of biblical unity.

A Promise Keeper is committed to influencing his world, being obedient to the Great Commandment (see Mark 12:30-31) and the Great Commission (see Matthew 28:19-20

I found the speakers, performances, and event more in line with our Catholic faith than many of the protestant denominations.

There were definitely decrees of abonination as it reates to divorce and abortion and taking responsibilty of one actions and the need to correct mistakes of ones past.

the amount of men attending this all male event was in excess of 15,000 for this 2 day event.

I do belong to a male catholic fraternal organization and thought this event drove home and reminded me to take more time and responsibility for my family, community, job, and to actively evangelize your paticular faith

I know that there is a similar Catholic group called St. Josephs’s Covanent Keepers.

I’m glad to hear that you found this ministry helpful and that it rekindled in you the awareness of a need to take time and responsibility for your family. Would that we all remember this important message!

God Bless,

CARose

My husband is apart of Covenant Keepers. He really enjoys talkin religion with other Dads.

Arlene,
Thanks for that information. My uncle and a few of my male relatives go to Promise Keepers. they always comment that there is never a Catholic alternative. Now I can tell them about this and I am sure they will be happy.

It seems so often that when we are looking within other faiths for something to fufill our spirituality there is always something more complete available within the Catholic faith that may not be as widely “advertised” (not the exact word I am looking for.)

The web sites you have are quite outdated and there is no conference schedule for St. Josephs or www.dads.org. This is the point there is nothing out there specifically for our specific Catholic faith like promise keepers

Reminding us catholic men to always renew our marriages, that the major causes for divorces is us men neglecting our family and wives in showing concern, communication, listen to our wives as this is one main concern of women today ( allowing our wives to seek attention elsewhere) , and love our spouses. Another man cannot entice a wife that is being fullfilled. Do you go to a gas station with a full tank of gas?

Do not let your children draw pictures of their family with you off to the side of the drawing or not in the picture at all.

My suggestion is go to one of these promise keepers conventions and be an observer. I would suggest you are strong in your Catholic faith so as not to be led astray and not evangelized by another.

Remember we as Christians in all sects are told by Christ to evangelize. The Promise Keepers is a mix of all basic Christian faiths.

I attended one of the PK conferences in its early stages, right at the time when my spiritual life was starting to take off, and found it to be immensely uplifting. There were over 20,000 men there, praying, singing, crying, and praising God together.

I did not personally see any type of “evangelization” going on, other than calling men to Christian values and family leadership.

The only weakness I saw to it was that, at least at that time, there was not a good followup in the form of small group accountability. Since I did my Cursillo weekend shortly after however, that problem was solved for me. PK was a great springboard and inspiration however.

Why not start your own group? That is what we did.

We started our own local group of Covenant Keepers with dad’s who have similar values. Some of the members are single. We began with watching The Carpenter’s Shop with Steve Wood with his his various guests and this stimulated discussion. We are now reading Familiaris Consortio by Pope JP II. We get together every other month at one of the guys house, always beginning with the rosary. The family hosting will sometimes pray the rosary with us and then we move into the topic and finish with refreshments. It goes about a couple of hours or so altogether.

So you have a men’s catholic group of single and married men and at the begining of the evening the families can join in prayer? I am just curious because I know my male relatives are certinaly searching for this kind of gathering. That sounds very nice. It certianly a good idea for both men and women to have strong friendship bonds that will support them in marriage and faith.

Yes, most of the men are married with children but there are a few single men as well. Our pastor has attended a meeting or two as well. Usually, since we are all travelling varying distances, it is usually the hosting family that will join the rest of the men in prayer. I believe it is a tremendous witness to each other especially the children. The majority of the dads in our group home school and are all solid in the faith. You might find something like this in your area with home school dads.

My wife has something similar she attends every other month as well tied to a home school support group…

BTW, we read Stephen Wood’s and James Burnham’s book called Christian Fatherhood and the 8 Commitments listed and detailed there after the the group was first organized and discussed over the first few meetings if my memory serves me correctly.

Thanks, for sharing the info, sounds good.

I went to the promise Keepers event in Washigton DC, along with about a million other men. I went on a 40 hour round trip bus ride with 40 Evangelical Chriistians. The bus ride was as good as the rally. It was one of the most profound Spiritual experiences in my life. My busmates came a away with a new respect for Catholicism and I came aqay with a deeper respect for Evangelical Christians. The Promise Keepers message trancends all denominations.
