It was a beautiful Mass at St. Cecilia’s Cathedral in Omaha. I’d guess there were over 1000 in attendance. The ordination was presided over by Bishop Athanasius Schneider from Kazakhstan.

Please pray for the 7 newly ordained priests (listed below), as well as the 2 deacons who will be ordained in Virginia next week! In 2012, the entire archdiocese of New York City ordained one man to the priesthood, so for the FSSP to have 9 in one year is incredible.

Father Joshua Curtis
Father Robert Dow
Father Michael Flick
Father Joseph Heffernan
Father Paul Leung
Father Daniel Nolan
Father Joshua Passo

Deacons Zachary Akers and Daniel Heenan will be ordained on June 14th in Leesburg, VA.

Here are pictures of the ordinations from the FSSP website: fssp.com/press/2014/05/bishop-athanasius-schneider-ordains-seven-in-omaha/

And here’s a link to Bishop Athanasius Schneider’s excellent book, Dominus Est:

FYI,

Fr Joshua Curtis, one of the seven, will be celebrating a Solemn High Mass at Sts Peter and Paul in Naperville, Il this coming Sunday (Pentecost). The time will be 2:30pm. This will be in lieu of the normal 5:30pm EF Mass at that parish.

What wonderful news. May God bless each and every one of these new priests.

Does anybody know if they or when they’ll upload the video of the ordination? I know they have the ones from the last couple of years.

Does anyone know where they will be assigned?
I have heard that Fr. Joshua Passo will be heading to Sarasota, Florida. Aside from that, I’m not sure about the others. I am guessing that the tragic incidents in Phoenix will change some priest assignments in the coming weeks.

I’ve got the suspicion that this year’s ordinations will not get uploaded. My wife tried to watch them live, but the feed never came through. I’m wondering if they had technical difficulties in recording them. It’s a shame because it was such a beautiful ceremony.

Congratulations both to the priests who are being ordained if they are reading this and to anyone whose diocese is getting a priest!

That said, is it true that FSSP priests only hold the Extraordinary Form of the Mass?

Yes, that is correct. Part of the charism of being in the FSSP is saying only the EF.

It is the very reason that they were established by St. John Paul II.

NOTE: there have been some expections when some of them have filled in to say an OF Mass in the geographic community when no other diocean Priest could fill in.

For example is another priest who normally says an OF Mass is sick or in the hospital and the only other priest avalible or in the area is an FSSP priest. In those few instances an FSSP priest might perform an OF Mass.

But in general, they only do the EF.

I’ve heard the possibility of this before, but in practice I don’t think it has happened. The priests of the FSSP are not even trained in the OF, so before they’d be able to fill in, they’d need to learn the rubrics first. So if this has happened before, I’ve never heard of it. I know quite a few fraternity priests, and none of them are trained to say the OF (with the exception of diocesan priests who later joined the fraternity).

I remember there was an issue in France in 1999 when a group of French FSSP priests wanted to say both the OF and EF, and it caused a split there. The CDW intervened and said that FSSP priests would be allowed to say the OF (I believe it was previously forbidden) even though the majority of FSSP priests were against it. As I recall, some, if not all, of the French priests who got the policy changed ended up leaving the fraternity.

I do know that there are FSSP priests who will sit in choir during the Holy Thursday Chrism Mass, but apart from that, I know of none who have presided over an OF Mass.
