This is a trivial question, but one I wonder about often.

Have you ever noticed how on EWTN they pronounce “Jesus” as “Jee-SOSS”? I’m from a Southern, Protestant background and have only heard it pronounced as “JEE-Zuss.”

Is the former a Catholic thing or what’s the deal?

No. It’s probably got more to do with the part of the country the people are who you have been listening to on EWTN come from–their regional accent. It seems most are from the eastern seaboard.

who is “they”? I never heard that pronunciation by a native English-language speaker on EWTN, although they do have some commentators for whom English is obviously a second language who do have pronounced accents. Down here in soTex it is usually Hay-ZUS (for a person, nickname Jesse, I have 3 in my class), or Hay-zu-KREE-sto, for Jesucristo, the name of the Lord.
