Hello,

My son is being confirmed in a few weeks, we are planning on having a dinner reception at a local restaurant afterwards. Is it appropriate to invite the pastor and the bishop to dinner? We are good friends with our pastor and he has come to dinner at our house before. However, while we have met the bishop we are not friends; to be honest he probably wouldn’t even remember who we are. I don’t want to be disrespectful, we would love to have the bishop come to dinner and get to know him better but I’m not sure that is appropriate. Does anyone know about this?

Also, the invitation packet I got to make our invitations includes reply cards like you would use for a wedding, is it inappropriate to use them for a confirmation invitation? I thought this would be helpful in planning the actual amount of people for the restaurant and helpful for people to respond quickly but I’m not sure if it’s too formal. Should I just include RSVP info on the invitation?

Thanks in advance for any advice you have.

Angela

We went casual with DS’ Confirmation - friends and famliy came to a rented cabin on the lake for BBQ and swimming. Now, our Parish has a full meal reception for the families after Confirmation, the Priests stay for that. You may want to see what the Parish has planned.

certainly you can invite them and it is a gracious gesture, but don’t be surprised if they decline, or even if sadly because of so many invitations they don’t even take time to decline formally.

]as far as reply cards, you are not inviting anyone to confirmation, that is for the Church to do as the Church governs the sacrament, you are inviting them to a reception, and may do that in any many that makes sense to you, but modern society being what it is may still find yourself calling everyone so you can give the restaurant a good count.

What Puzzleannie said. Our parish confirms 120 or more teens each year. Neither the pastor nor the bishop is going to attend 120 dinners, bbqs, or anything else. Likely they both go back to the rectory to put their feet up!

I would consider sending your pastor a thank you card for preparing your son for the sacrament. Invite him to dinner at another time when demands on his time won’t be so great and he won’t be so tired.
