I’m currently running a Apologetics club at my highschool, and we are presently doing an analysis/discussion of the history and purpose of the Bible. While outlining this discission topic, I ran into a roadblock. I need help understanding the proper methods of interpretting scripture. I also need help understanding the purpose of the Bible. Why is scripture necessary if we have the Church to guide us?

P.S. I would also be greatly thankful if someone could inform me of the different varieties of the Holy Bible that are available for both Catholics AND Protestants.

Your help is truly appreciated. 😃

Here are two articles from Catholic Answers you may find helpful:

How to Read Scripture Like Jesus and the Apostles

One Text, Four Senses

I’d also highly recommend Mark Shea’s book, Making Senses Out of Scripture:

The Catechism of the Catholic Church also has a good section on this (Sections 101–141). I’d also recommend “Beginning Apologetics 7: How To Read the Bible,” found here:

For a good general discussion on this visit the St. Charles Borromeo site, found here:
scborromeo.org/index2.htm

Go to the frame on the left and click on “The Truth.”

Finally, visit my personal page, linked below.

Thanks for the sources… It was EXTREMELY helpful.

But does anyone know where I can get Protestant-Friendlier information?

I’d truly appreciate your help. God Bless You.
