Proper Place to Put an Umbrella during Mass?

When it is raining, I usually put my umbrella on the floor during Mass, I’ve heard from others in church that this shouldn’t be done and you should instead leave it in your car, but this doesn’t make sense. Where do you place things like your umbrella or wet coat?

Sometimes people close their umbrellas and leave them in the corner at the entrance to church. And sometimes, they forget them on the way out. Walmart has umbrella bags at the entrance of our store. Perhaps you could get one and keep it to reuse when you go to mass. Then you could keep it at your seat on the floor (under your seat.)

If you take your wet coat off, you could turn the wet side in on itself, (dry side out) and fold it small enough to put next to you on the seat, or across the back of the seat in front of you if no one is sitting there.

Leave it by the entrance. If your parish does not have umbrella rack by the door, buy them one.

Another option is to simply wear a hat or a rain jacket with a hood and fold.it as described above

I don’t really know why (avoiding people queuing at the same place maybe?), but, since we’ve been hit by Covid, my parish specifically asks people to put their umbrellas under their seat.

Seriously, if the church has a coat rack in the foyer, hang your coat and umbrella there. If it doesn’t have a coat rack, suggest that they get one (or more, if its a large parish).

My parish has a portico at the front entrance. Most of us shake the umbrella out there to get the excess water off, and then just put it under the pew.

Leaving in the car seems to defeat the purpose of an umbrella.

It really does. I think shaking it out if there’s an appropriate place to do so and leaving it under the pew is fine, but if you’re worried getting a cover or holder would be best.

Alternately if you have a bag then you can get one of the compact umbrellas and store it there. The compact ones can easily be wrapped in an ordinary plastic bag.
