A person in my life who has a grudge against me (unfounded, by the way) and fairly serious, untreated mental illness is threatening to “call on dark powers” in order to “get rid of” me.

If she actually attempts that, is there any reason to believe I would be in danger of demonic attack? Besides receiving the sacraments, are there other steps I should take as a precaution?

If you are, and stay, in a state of grace by frequenting the sacraments and having a well-established prayer life, you should be fine.

Besides the sacraments, the rosary is also an extremely powerful weapon in combating demons.

Nothing demonic is more powerful than the divine. Don’t let this person scare you. Just keep up being a good Catholic and you won’t be in any trouble!

Pray Psalms 16, 23 and 91, the Rosary (or at least the Our Father and the Fatima Prayer) and the Saint Michael prayer. If after prayer and receiving the Sacraments you are still uneasy or afflicted, you can request a priest to perform blessings on you and your property. The Devil can’t do anything to your soul while you’re in a state of grace, nor can any power on Earth or in Hell compel you to commit a mortal sin. Demons can attack your body, torment your family or wreck your property, but remember that all things work together for good for them that love the Lord.

As others have said, you should definitely notify the police. In situtations such as these with the disturbed, it is much better to be safe than sorry

Regarding peotection from demons, these deliverance prayers for use by the laity render the evil spirits limp and pathetic: Amazon.com

I love those prayers, as they remind the demons that mankind is redeemed through the infinite merits of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Therefore, the demons, when repelled by this fact that they try with all of their power to reduce cognizance of, have no business treating humans as though they were lower than dogs, as they so frequently do, which is manifested on the news every day.

The evil spirits have wreaked havoc during Satan’s 100 years of unprecedented power, especially subsequent to the rescinding of Pope Leo XIII’s order to pray the exorcism prayer to St. Michael after Masses in 1964 by a Vatican II document Inter Ocumenici. This document was intended to temporarily suspend this practice which was implemented by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 after having a horrid vision of Satan being granted by Jesus 100 years of unprecedented power in his hideous efforts to prevail, with the gates of Hell, against Jesus’ Catholic Church. However, the St. Michael exorcism prayer was never reinstituted after Masses after its “temporary” suppression by Inter Ocumenici. Satan is cunning, and his machinations are particularly effective when they are coupled with stupidity by the Church hierarchy.

Another example of Satan’s cunning influence being coupled with stupidity by the the Church hierarchy is found in the failure of the Bishops and Pope to consecrate Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary as Our Lady of Fatima had urgently requested before Russia spread its errors throughout the world.

Please talk to your Priest about this. He can ease your mind and give you peace.

This person sounds unwell. Pray for her. And can you disassociate yourself from her

This is beyond silly, no one has any kind of power to cast demons on another person; it is just wishful thinking for people who wish they had some kind of super power to control some aspect of their life that they are not comfortable with. You can’t force God or Jesus upon another person, same thing for demons or satan.

Satan prowls the earth like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
Sometimes the devils use willing mortals as pawns, to corrupt the mortal who would try to control them and to torment others. A demon might respond to such a call, not because the caller has power but because the demon sees an opportunity.
That being said, the advice already given here is good. Stay in the state of grace; receive the sacraments. Pray, especially the Rosary and the prayer to Saint Michael.

it is non sense, nothing more or less, the advice given is good in that promotes faith, but it does lack in that it is giving credence to the idea of having some kind of super power to conjure up demons or witch craft , if that was possible, which it isn’t, then one would be able to do something equivalent to summon saints and angels or Jesus.

An satans power is limited and weak. Plenty of other real problems to worry about than demons and satan. Doesn’t mean Satan and demons do not exist, there are just bigger things to worry about is all.

Before you do anything else go to the Police, if you have evidence take that with you and lodge a complaint. If you can stay with a relative and get a restraining order too.

Your personal safety is your top priority. She has threatened your life. If she is as unwell as you state then she could follow through with this murderous threat.

Apologies to other readers: In bold to stand out.

Nobody has power to summon up demons.

Sometimes demons choose to answer when someone tries to summon them because they see a chance to corrupt the would-be summoner and use them to corrupt or torment other people.

Even if it was possible to compel demons to respond it would not follow that we could therefore ‘summon up’ saints or angels.

Satan’s power is limited and weak, compared to that of the saints and angels. He’s still more powerful than we are. Our safety lies in the protection of God. Hence the vital importance of remaining in the state of grace, receiving the sacraments and prayer. It’s also important that we neither exaggerate the power of the demons nor dismiss the threat as non-existent.

The person is mentally ill. I would be more concerned that she takes some steps to get rid of you herself than of any “demons” she might threaten to send. If you pray and receive the blessing of your priest, you have nothing to fear from demons, but you might well have something to fear from the violence of a mentally unbalanced fellow human. I would definitely alert the police and do what was necessary to avoid this individual in every way.

Hello Jane, my advice is to wear Sacramentals daily especially a crucifix, and scapular. A Miraculous medal and Saint Benedict’s medal would be great too - the Saint Benedict’s medal is made especially for protection against demons. You are in my prayers, God bless.

That is the most dangerous thinking there is, and what satan wants you to think.

I totally agree. Satan is most happy and dangerous being invisible and denied by good people. Actually there are not bigger things to worry about than satan and demons since they are the ones that cause havoc in the world. Without both, the world would be Eden. Satan works by obsessing or possessing a person and then inflicting such person’s thoughts and actions on to people around that person (spread the wealth!), which is what the OP’s begrudged person plans to do. It is serious and I wouldn’t be surprised if the begrudged person is already demon-obsessed or possessed which explains that person’s actions to begin with.

The Rosary is key in battling satan and demons.

The Catholic Church says otherwise. I’ll go with what church says, not what some random poster who seems to think he can pick and choose what parts of the faith to believe in.

I hadn’t read anything of her situation besides “protection from demons” before commenting, but I agree with you wholeheartedly
