Protestant becoming Catholic-- Strange event at first baptism makes me question whether it "counted" or not

When I was baptized into the Methodist Church, my fiance and our (at the time) newborn daughter were also baptized. In the Methodist Church baptism is done in front of the entire congregation. Our daughter was screaming the entire time, our minister became very flustered and said my name instead of my daughter’s name when he was baptizing her and I had to correct him in front of the whole congregation because, you know, it’s a huge deal. Then when he put the oil on my forehead, it didn’t actually get on my forehead because I had bangs and they were in the way, so it just went onto my hair and not my forehead.

I know this sounds pretty silly, but does any of this matter? Does this mean I’m not properly baptized or that my daughter isn’t in the eyes of God because of these things?

Also, since we were baptized in the Methodist church but are becoming Catholics because I firmly and truly believe that the Catholic Church is Christ’s true church, CAN we be baptized again IN the Catholic Church even if we aren’t “required” to??

Thank you for taking the time to read this… I’m sure this sounds rather silly to those who are more knowledgeable and experienced, I apologize. I just have never been at peace about whether we were truly baptized or not…

No, you can’t be “re-baptized.” As long as your head got wet from the water you’re baptized.

In RCIA you’ll learn the Nicene Creed, which is what the Catholic Church believes in, here’s the important line in your case:

“I confess ONE BAPTISM for the forgiveness of sins.”

Ok, thank you for clarifying that, I appreciate your response. 🙂

Agreed, God doesn’t make mistakes. We do, but He doesn’t. By the way you will love RCIA.
👍

If there was serious doubt about this, you could have conditional baptism. Not that I know of a reason for serious doubt. I’m not clear about it, but were you baptized with water? Though I presume that you were. Since oil itself isn’t a means of baptism, what happened with such oil wouldn’t matter.
I suggest you speak with a priest about this to clear up any doubts or questions in your mind.

Was that a Trinitarian baptism? (I.e., in the name of the Holy Trinity?)

A valid trinitarian Baptism, done with water, is a valid baptism. You have no need to be re-baptized.

Yes it was Trinitarian with water. I guess I don’t need to worry, and I am really looking forward to RCIA!
