Anyone ever hear of Protestant Monasticism? I didn’t think it existed! Soren Kierkegaard, among other evangelicals, I thought, criticized monastic life because it focuses on works as opposed to simple faith, or something like that.

So, does anyone know of some good books or articles that deal with this topic?

A quick Google search turns up some links, such as this one:

A Brief History of Protestant Monasticism

Groups such as the Anglican Church, which preserve the concept of religious orders, can easily include monasticism in their denominations. It’s a little more puzzling to me how it works for more full-blown Protestant groups.

The home page of the link above indicates their monastery is for the laity. Doesn’t seem to have quite the depth of dedication as consecrating your life to God in a particular religious order.

additionally, there is the Iona community is Scotland, which is Presbyterian. I beleive 3 monastic communities in Germany which embraced the Reformation survived until the 1930’s when they were dissolved udner Nazi fascism.

The Anglicans have the Order of the Holy Cross centered in West Park, NY.

There is a Lutheran community of men called St. Augustine’s House near Detroit MI. I visited it once as a child (I was raised Lutheran.)

There’s an Anglican Benedictine convent here in Toronto. My Mum’s a lay associate.

That is interesting since Luther thought the monastic life was the work of the devil in the catholic church. He more than anyone else is responsible for the the divorce of monasticsm in protestant life. The Anglcians are the only prots with any signficant numbers of monastics anymore. Any other group would clearly be the exception to the rule. Kind of like the married Latin Rite Priest you have to look hard to find one.

Southern Baptists aren’t allowed to dance, which automatically prevents sexual activity.

Monasticism can take many different forms.
