The preacher of St. Peter’s Congregational Church baptized a horse today. So, what do you think about that?

See the story:

story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1503&ncid=1503&e=13&u=/afp/20041024/ts_afp/safrica_horse_offbeat_041024140654

I wonder if this was a believers only baptism?
Can the Horse preach if given a degree by a protestant church?
Can the horse loose its salvation?
Are there any horese elders in your church?
If the horse tried to evangilise you would you listen?
Will the horse speak in tongues for us to understand it?

So many questions and not enough room.

Uhm, were will the “RE”-formed theology take us next?

I want my dog baptised so she can be with me in heaven! (I don’t want the fleas baptised though. I don’t want fleas in heaven. Does my hatred of fleas make me a bigot?)

Of course not - it’s hoarse already. Laying on of hands would also prove difficult…

“I baptise this teddy bear - Cuddles…” - or is that going too far ? 😃

Personally, I’d like to see some more information on whether or not the minister in question intended an actual baptism. It does seem to indicate that, but I’d still like more clarification. After all, the Catholic Church has baptized bells. In reality, it was just a blessing using Holy Water but it was not uncommon to refer to it as a baptism even though such a thing is not possible in the Catholic Faith.

So, do teddy bears have souls too?:hmmm:

Oh well, lets just give it another 500 years. Put your teddy bear in a time capsule with instructions for it to be baptised. Surely by then someone will be doing it to fit their every whim and fancey.

Do you think the news media would misslead us or give us false or incomplete information? Not in today’s society anyway.

I would assume so, unless there are others in the area who go around baptising horses.😃

If the Episcopalians can have a gay Bishop then why not.

I’m sure he was properly educated on “sola fide”.

(same answer as #2)

If a horse spoke so that we could understand, I think everyone would listen. (Good tool for evangelization? Maybe we should try to convert him?)

Holy Spirit willing. (I am sure he is not.)

I don’t have a problem with it, but I am sure that fleas don’t appreciate it.😃

One could always argue that teddy bears are loved into existence, and given personality (so why not a soul? ), by the children who are given them.

I think the child and bear analogy has promise for discussions of alleged idolatry. 🙂 ##

I’m with theMutant. Having been misquoted by the press a dozen times myself, I would like to know whether the pastor used the correct trinitarian baptismal formula. Otherwise, he just sprinkled the horse and gave it a blessing. Of course, you have the problem that Congregationalists are not wont to sprinkle things with holy water . . . Still, I need more evidence.

If it was a “baptism,” then it was definitely a “believers only” baptism because only a horses you-know-what could believe this!

I think this is evidence they did not sprinkle the Congregationalist Christian horse:

us.news1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/p/afp/20041024/thumb.sge.upr87.241004140448.photo00.photo.default-266x384.jpg

Now Scripture does command us to baptize our entire household though I do not live in a barn. I do have four of these hay burners in the back yard. Now if household includes infants, slaves and non-believers could it also mean our pets too?

Boy, this was some ‘sprinkling’.😉

The text of the article said: “Members of St. Peter’s Congregational Church watched as Reverend Deric Derbyshire splashed the horse’s forehead with water . . .”

But certainly from this photo, it looks like a ful immersion Baptism (unless this was a file shot of the exercise pool racehorses now train in). Clearly full immersion would militate in favor of “believer’s baptism” in this case.:whacky:

I see that it was not full immersion and it was just splashing. Is it a valid baptism? Did the horse make a profession of faith?

It doesn’t sound like a valid baptism mecygate. It didn’t say anything about a profession of faith either, so I am a little suspicious.

who were the godparents?
did the horse make a profession of faith?
did the parents take pre-baptismal classes?
does the baptismal certificate get sent to the Jockey Club?
we use a horse trough for baptisms at the Easter vigil - are they valid?
If this was a Congregational church, then this horse must have some voting privileges now that he is a church member.
Can horses be deacons?
a horse is horse of course of course
and no one can talk to a horse of course
unless the horse is mr. Ed.
