Protestant Woman "preacher" delivering homily in Catholic Church

So, I just got back from service at the parish we began attending, in hopes it would be better than the last.

This parish has a tradition of sharing its lent services with two protestant churches.

The first preacher read one of the readings, then the priest, then I watched in shock, as the Blessed Sacrament is in the Church still, as a woman gets up and starts reading some kiddy lent story to us. In my 20 years as a Baptist I never had to sit through a woman preaching at me, the last place I expected it was in a Catholic Church.

Now, this was not Mass. So, is a Protestant preacher allowed to deliver the homily in this situation? What are the rules on this? I just want to make sure they weren’'t in any error in this respect.

Thank you, I know that now.

Just prayed a rosary and Our Lady revealed my misunderstanding of it all. Amazing thing is, me and my boyfriend finished the rosary and we each had been visited and told the same thing!

I’m glad to know now.

We realized it wasn’t God keeping us from mass this morning(see post in Back Fence) and it wasn’t He who wanted us to confuse ourselves tonight. Thank God for answering when we seek Him!

One thing no one in the SBC or FC Methodist Churches have to worry about is the danger of having a woman as minister.
That is one of the things which keeps me with the FCM and away from UMC:thumbsup:

If it was not Mass, you did not hear a homily. The homily is the address delivered during Mass by the priest or deacon based on the lectionary readings. Nothing else is a homily. If you are at Mass, and any person, man or woman, who is not ordained delivers any kind of message, from any location, on any topic, it is not, by definition, a homily. No there is nothing to prevent anyone from delivering an address in an ecumenical prayer service that does not pretend to be a Mass. The prudence of participating in such services is the matter for another discussion probably in another forum.

um, I think there is an exception…

There can be a “Liturgy of the Word” without the “Liturgy of the Eucharist”…(like at a wedding). It has a couple readings, a Gospel, and a homily (must be given by a deacon or priest).

I’m pretty sure that is called a homily also, and it is not a Mass.

Yes, you are correct about the nuptial liturgy without a mass, but the same thing…a deacon usually will celebrate this service and he will deliver the homily, not a lay person.

I read it with interest.

I would attend a latin rite. But that might be due to nostalgia and trip back to my youth.

However, my humble view:: ‘old rite, new rite or old rite revised’ makes no difference, it is the Real Presence of the Blessed Sacrament that counts. The sacred traditions of the Mighty Holy Apostolic Catholic Church are important but subordinate to and serve Christ’s presence in the Holy Mass. Newer ideas and all else is trivia.
