Protestants, a pragmatic question

Let me get this straight: are you seriously arguing that believing the Catholic Church must be an all-or-nothing proposition? That if you believe they got it right on the Bible, you must believe that they got it right on every single other issue for all time?

What are you wanting to get at? The topic of the post is the scriptures only. The church only speaks of infallibility on matters of faith & morals.

And I said that your logic doesn’t follow and I used Paul as an example. The letters he wrote that made the final cut (some of his letters did not make the final cut) are accepted inspite ot the fact that he is fallible. He wrote them which is far more important that choosing which letters get cannonized. Those doing the cannonization don’t need to be infallible, just like Paul isn’t. The key you seem to be missing is the Holy Spirit. He’s the one that is infallible. He inspired Paul and He inspired the cannonization. Because of the Holy Spirit, we don’t need to be perfect and won’t be until Heaven.

You are right; the HS inspired the Bishops of the RCC during the canonization process The individual Bishops are indeed, not infallible, but when acting in unison…

Jesus was infallible so for Him to say He sanctified (consecrated) Himself doesn’t mean He made Himself infallible.

No friend go back and read John 17:15-19… What Jesus said was He consecrated Himself as the evidence of truth in His Church. The Truth of HER Teachings on Faith and Morals. This can be assured because He was praying for His Apostles who are Catholic, and His Church which He keeps Holy and TRUTHFUL by direct intervention, even to the present day. Notice the verse where He is sending [has set] the Holy Spirit “for all eternity” to insure the continuation of total and complete truth in Official Church Teaching on Morals and Faith.

God Himself proclaims by His Divine Word and action that the Catholic Church cannot as is NOT even a possibility of error, when Teaching on Faith and Morals. The CC was the only Christian Church when the Bible was completed prior to the end of the First Century. Thus Christ HAD to be speaking of His Caholic Church, there were no other options.

Hi, Thanks for responding.

As an informed and practicing Roman Catholic, I encounter personal understanding of the Bible that are darn right contrary to what it is actually saying.

This permissive attitude that the Bible is saying what I think its saying is I beleive the root cause of the many, many hundreds of different Protestant secs, each believing what they chose to hold as truth.

Catholic have a uniform understanding that if our understanding is not in accord with what The Church holds to be true, and is Taught by Her as the Truth, then we are wrong.

There can only be one single truth on any specific topic, and on all matters of Faith and Morals [only] that truth resides in Christ Catholic Church.

I struggle to accept the “logic” in personal choice?

If self interpretation is such a big deal then why are we even allowed to have Bibles? God has given us his word to read and study. And He sent the Holy Spirit to help us.

I think most Christians, with the help of the HS, are capable of reading the Bible effectively and interpreting most of it. Why are you asking (in your OP) this of Protestants? Do you think there are not Catholics who interpret the Bible on their own sometimes? If not, then why even own a Bible?

Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.

A Catholic is not forbidden to own and self interpret the Bible in order to enrich his or her relationship with God. However, a Catholic must seek and ensure that his or her interpretation of Scripture conforms to what the Church teaches. Ignoring this is ignorance of the true meaning of scripture, and ignoring the true meaning of scripture is ignorance of scripture and ignorance of scripture is ignorance of Christ. Ignorance of Christ is ignorance of God.
