I’ve never thought of present-day Protestants as my opponents. I’ve only ever seen what I have in common with them.

At one time there will have been a conflict, perhaps due to resentment at Catholics’ over-severe treatment of their dissent. (Church and state weren’t separated then anyway.)

Both the dissent and the later resentment will tend to have crystallised around issues of doctrine.

Some people are still fighting an old battle.

Whether there is a prophetic purpose in God letting them stay like that, we can’t see for the foreseeable.
No I don’t see them as my “opponents” either. But I do tend to strongly favor the higher Protestant faiths who still have the liturgy and are more historical. (also have a soft spot for the Quakers - again historically not modern) I can’t keep up at all with our Evangelical and non-denominational buddies - you don’t really know what they are about and what they think about Catholics, where their info is coming from…what they believe…

For better or worse, I usually just do to others as they do unto me - I am friendly with the friendly and snappy with the snappy. Treat the sheep as sheep, wolves as wolves. (certainly not saying this is the ideal “good Catholic” approach to our separated brethren - it is just what I end up doing :)…)
