Why is it that a lot of protestant churches don’t understand sin or what sin is?

Why would they? If you believe you’re forgiven for everything you ever have or will do, how much time would you spend examining your conscience?

Exactly! That’s the conundrum of the OSAS mentality. Even though many of them seem to admit that they should avoid sin, many of them just shrug off some things they do that happen to be sinful, because they think they won’t be held accountable for it, as long as they believe in their hearts that they’re ‘saved’. I have no idea how they can objectively assess their true state of sanctity with that kind of attitude, or how they would even begin to know what they needed to do in order to progress toward true holiness. 🤷

One of the things which started bringing me back to Catholicism was a statement by a non Catholic Christian woman who was considering the sinfulness of filing for divorce against her fourth husband, not for beating her up, or infidelity or anything like that, but just because he “wouldn’t change”

She knew it was a sin but said rather boldly, “it doesn’t matter because I’m already forgiven”

I knew that was something I’d only hear outside of Catholicism.

Not all Protestants teach OSAS, and AFAIK not even a majority do. I say the confession of sin at every Eucharist and every Morning Prayer service.

that is a mighty global accusation, on what evidence do you base it?
the various Protestant ministers, youth ministers, leaders and others I work with around here, and their congregations, and the commentators on the local Christian radio station (there is no Catholic station in my range) display a very healthy sense of sin and the need for conversion and forgiveness so I can’t say I agree with the scope of your assertion.

why don’t you change the question from “most” to “some” or give some characterization of the denominations where you have seen this problem.

The evidence would be related to posts 2, 3, and 4, but more to the point, that “a lot” of Protestants churches reject personal holiness because they see salvation as merely a covering of the sinner by the Merits of Jesus. This would leave the sinner still lost in their sins.

Those who wish a closeness with God and are led along that path see the distinct nature of grace and of sin and the necessary union between evil and sin. Ultimately, those who fail to distinguish these and who are led to presume upon God’s Mercy are not “protesting” His Church but God Himself as they reject His perfecting Spirit and accept their own willful desires.

Wow, I guess it’s okay for me to blame all catholics for the foolishness/ignorance of a few? Better buckle up! 😃

👍

“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sin, God who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins, and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
