I agree with the scripture you picked , but am not thrilled with your translation.

It’s not MY translation. However, I have to take responsibility for grabbing it from an online version of the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) which is the translation widely used in the ELCA.

Here’s the Revised Standard Version (RSV) reading –

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God;
3 all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

And here’s the New American Bible (NAB) reading –

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be. What came to be
4 through him was life, and this life was the light of the human race;
5 the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The most important verse is found in Deuteronomy 6. Hear O Israel the Lord our God is one Lord, and you shall love the lord with all your heart, and all your soul, and all your might…

=JonNC;5840935]I can see what you’re saying here, Pat. It kind of makes us “read on” and depend on the HS to help us find what our blindness often hides.

He wept for his friend, Lazarus, and the women and friends around him that were themselves weeping. And in an extended way, through his humanity, he weeps for you and me, and our pains and trials. So yes, the cause still exists today. That he loved us long before we loved him, and that he wept for sinful beings, is beyond my understanding.

The idea of having to" select a single verse from thousands of possibilities is in my opinion a challange to really think about what is important to us [in the present moment] and where one is currently with ones personal relationship with Chrsit.

It seems to me that there are no truly wrong answers, but much to be gained in personal insights to the Divine Magesty of our God.

Jon, why in this instance did Jesus weep? Does the cause still exist today?

May I give you my favorite verse it is from luke24:13-35.“On the Road to Emmaus.”
In our daily walk on the road of life, Jesus is with us to teach us. Do we recognize Him?
It is was only after the disciples invited him in that they recognized him in the breaking of the bread.We must invite him into our lives daily,living with him in the present moment.
It is a beautiful teaching of the Eucharist.A touch of :heaven: Carlan

In you’re opinion what is the single most signifiant verse in the Bible? Why?

For me it is Matthew 8:8 because I am reminded how much Christ loves us.

I like John 14:6. Not because it don’t say we need a specific church to get us to the Father , but that may be an interesting point. Jesus and Him only.
