protestants=ultratraditionalist

I was debating a protestant today, and I try to avoid ad hominem arguements… so i didn’t attack him personally… which is stupid to attack someone anyway
But he kept attacking me personally… which i just tried to ignore…
ANYWAY… the point this… is
that one time he brought up the website the holy family monastery…

and it got me thinking how the church has many enemies… and now it seems that the their is no distinction between protestants and ultra-traditionalist like those at the holyfamilymonastary

it’s actually quite sad…

any thoughts on this?

P.S. don’t get me wrong… i spend time on these traditional forums… and consider myself a little on the traditional side… but by traditional i mean ULTRAtraditional… that go so far to reject the pope and the mass etc etc…
 
I think you might reconsider your stance. After all, a so-called “ultratraditionalist” could just as well allege that Vatican II Catholicism is more like Protestantism: especially with regards to the revised liturgy, which follows the Protestant blueprint, as well as with the relaxing of the emphasis on doctrinal orthodoxy.

Remember, the reason that “ultratraditionalists” reject the current popes and the Novus Ordo Mass is because they find them to be at variance with traditional Church teachings and practice. The Protestant Reformers, on the other hand, were primarily appealing to Scripture—they largely disregarded tradition. Traditionalist Catholics abhor almost everything there is to abhor in Protestantism. Protestants reject the entire papacy; sedevacantists only reject certain popes. The difference is hugely important.

If there is an Achille’s heel of the sedevacantist view, it is that it’s very much an ultramontanist position, not anti-papal. They actually hold the office to an incredibly high standard.
 
As a former anti-Catholic and now a Catholic defender (though, not Catholic), I understand both sides now. Most Protestants feel like they’re doing a favor by bashing Catholics personally to make you more vulnerable to Protestantism. The attacks will usually come when you start showing that you will not conform to them, or in the beginning. They think that they are loving and kind, but are really wolves. I’m glad God changed me and turned me from my anti-Catholicism. 🙂

There are some similarities, but the differences are also great. Protestants have had centuries to develop a seperation from the Church. Most the groups like Holy Family are still in first or second generation of their separation from Rome.
 
The Holy Fathers and Doctors of the Church have taught that we should avoid errors on the right as well as errors on the left, but “keep to the royal path.”

As one Orthodox priest put it, “If the river of God’s revelation were 100 yards wide, we should all wade out fifty yards and head straight downstream with it.”
