Ignoring the fact that her make-up was closer to a Japanese Geisha than anything that would have been common in ancient China (feel free to correct me if I’m wrong on this point), she didn’t want to wear that make-up or that robe in the movie. Most of the Mulan merchandise is more girly than in her character in the movie, so I’m not surprised that this was done with Merida. I think that’s just the way Disney merchandising works; they put the princesses in the fanciest dress they wear in the movies and make that the signature outfit.
